Micron and VIA showcase a system with 1Gb DDR SDRAM modules Today at Platform Conference in Silicon Valley, Micron and VIA showed off VIA VT8116 desktop motherboard with 1Gb unbuffered DIMM DDR SDRAM modules. It’s claimed to provide 266Mbps module output or 2.1Gb/s bandwidth total.![]() Memory modules feature 0.11-micron chips. As for the motherboard, it features 6 PCI slots, 1 AGP slot, 3 DIMM sockets, AC97 codec, 100Mbps Ethernet and UltraATA/133 controller.
ASUS AP1600R: new dual-processor Intel Xeon platform ASUS presented specifications of its dual-processor AP1600R platform for one or two 2.4GHz+ Intel Xeon chips. AP1600R has a standard 1U form-factor for rackmount installation.![]() AP1600R bases on Serverworks GCLE + CIOBX2 bundle, supports up to 12Gb of ECC DDR266/200 and up to 4 hot-swap SCSI hard drives; features two 64-bit 133MHz PCI-X slots, integrated 10/100/1000Mbps (Intel 82544GC) and 10/100Mbps (Intel 82551) LAN controllers, dual-channel Ultra 160/320 SCSI controller (LSI 53C1010R/53C1030), 8Mb ATI RAGE-XL graphics. Hewlett-Packard releases new blades ![]() Hewlett-Packard announced new 4-processor ProLiant BL40p blade for the line of 1-, 2- and 4-processor blades. HP ProLiant BL40p bases on 1.5-2.0GHz Xeon MP with 400MHz FSB and is designed for systems supporting several CPUs and SAN connectivity, for example, large enterprise application server arrays, messaging systems, CRM and ERP systems.
Besides, HP has also announced a new generation of HP ProLiant BL20p G2 on 2.8GHz Xeon with 533MHz FSB to connect to various SANs. New HP ProLiant BL20p blades are designed for terminal server arrays, web hosting systems, e-commerce and streaming services.
The company also presented a new version of HP ProLiant BL10e server on 900MHz ULV Intel Pentium III with 512Kb L2 cache. HP ProLiant BL10e is a solution for working on the border of network and infrastructure, i.e. in web servers, internetwork screens and caching servers. A 3U case can contain up to 20 HP ProLiant BL10e blades, and the full-size 42U rackmount – 280 units. ProLiant BL p and e class are backward compatible with existing BL cases to protect customer investments. HP ProLiant BL blades are controlled through HP ProLiant Essentials, HP Insight Manager 7 and HP OpenView software. HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack provides simultaneous automatic configuration and installation of operating systems and applications to hundreds of servers. The company will start to accept orders for these products in mid-March. In USA HP ProLiant BL40p will cost from $8999, HP ProLiant BL20p – from $3399. Apple announces 2x1.42GHz Power Mac and 20.1" Cinema Display Today Apple announced a new addition to Power Mac G4 desktop line along with a new 20.1" Cinema Display.![]() Now the Power Mac G4 line includes a high-end system on 1.42GHz Motorola PowerPC G4 with 2Mb L3 cache, featuring 120Gb ATA/100 HDD, SuperDrive 4x DVD recorder, FireWire 800 ports, built-in 56K modem, 54Mbps AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth. Higher-end Power Mac G4 features 2Gb DDR333 SDRAM and 128Mb NVIDIA GeForce4 Titanium. Systems with 512Mb DDR333 SDRAM and 64Mb ATI Radeon 9000 Pro are also available.

The middle model has two 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 with 1Mb L3 cache, and 256Mb DDR333 SDRAM, 80Gb Ultra ATA/100 HDD, DVD/CD-RW Combo, 64Mb ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, FireWire 800, built-in 56K modem and Bluetooth. As for prices, having released new system, Apple announced that from now on 1GHz Power Mac G4 will cost $1499 instead of $1699, 2x1.25GHz system $1999 instead of $2499, new 2x1.42GHz system $3799. Besides, the company has also posted a comparative diagram to illustrate the performance growth.
![]() As for new 20.1" Apple Cinema Display, it is a wide-screen (16:10) model supporting 1680x1050 resolution offered for $1299. Now Apple´s LCD line includes 23" high-end Cinema HD with 1920x1200 resolution which now costs $3499 instead of $1999, 20.1" Cinema and 17" Studio Display with 1280x1024 resolution, which now costs $699 instead of $999.

Both devices feature 16Mb of built-in flash memory.![]() The higher end DMVC2000 is a multipurpose portable device combining a webcam, digital camera, digital voice recorder and SD USB card storage for short movies. Taiwanese AU Optronics received 20% in Fujitsu Display Japanese Fujitsu and its Fujitsu Display Technologies division signed memorandum of understanding with AU Optronics (AUO) to widely collaborate in the field of LCD panel development and production. Companies negotiated Taiwanese part to get 20% equiv. of Fujitsu Display Technologies.As you know, Fujitsu Display subsidiary was formed by Fujitsu in June last year. Separation of LCD production business was a part of Fujitsu restructuring program. From the very beginning the company aimed at alliances with Japanese and foreign companiesto reduce production cost price. AU Optronics was created in September 2001 by the merge of Acer Display Technologies and Unipac Optoelectronics. The complete agreement information will be published in March. According to provisional data, Fujitsu and AU Optronics are going to make an additional $1.1 billion investment to expand the development, production, and marketing of LCD displays. Besides, both partners will exchange patents in this field, and the Japanese side will continue to move facilities to Taiwan, according to the production cost price reduction program.
