Sharp Zaurus SL-C860: a new PDA with VGA display

Late in November Sharp is to launch shipments (Japan only) of its new Zaurus SL-C860 PDA.

The new device bases on 400MHz Intel XScale PXA255 processor, features 128MB flash, 64MB SDRAM, 3.7" 640x480 LCD (similar to one used in SC-C760).

Zaurus SL-C860 works under the traditional Linux OpenPDA. From other models SL-C860 differs by an installed Japanese-Engligh and vice versa dictionary (110,000 and 250,000 words, respectively) and the "Zaurus drive" technology enabling desktops to recognize PDA as an external storage during USB connections.

The new model features Compact Flash and Secure Digital slots. Sized 120x83x23.2mm, it weighs 250g. The integrated Li-Ion battery provides 8.5 hours of operation. In Japan the estimated price is about $630, and no data on SL-C860 shipments to other regions have been disclosed yet.

MF Film Holder™ — scan a whole strip of 120/220 film frames at one time

The MF Film Holder™ has been designed to mimic the performance characteristics of the factory supplied Epson medium format holders. If you have problems concerning color balance, system calibration and other software related issues, please seek help with these issues from Epson or your third party software supplier. (Epson 3170 users, please click here for special notes.)

Advantages:

  • Designed to work with the:
    • Epson 2450
    • Epson 3200
    • Epson 3170 (see note about use with the 3170 here)
    • Epson 4870 (newly announced 4800 dpi flatbed)
  • Allows you to work faster, more efficiently and safely with your medium format film
    • Allows you to scan a whole strip of film at once (up to 202mm in length)
    • Makes batch scanning an easy option for medium format film with the standard Epson Scan software as well as Silverfast Ai and VueScan software
    • Minimizes the need to reposition your film, therefore less handling of your film means less chance of damage from fingerprints, dropping your film on a dirty surface, etc.
  • Infinitely variable scanning length with the T-lock system
    • Adjusts to accept "645", "6x6", "6x7", "6x9" film and any film length up to 202 mm
    • Scan up to 4 "645" frames, 3 "6x6", 2 "6x7" or 2 "6x9" frames at once
    • Helps maintain flatness with your film because the T-Lock inserts can be placed at any position within the film channel of the MF Film Holder — even if the film is cut to odd lengths
    • Allows you to crop down to just one film frame in a strip for maximum flatness of that film frame during scanning
  • Suspends film in the film holding channel at the same approximate height as the factory Epson 3200 holder
  • Allows you to scan panoramic images made on 120/220 film
  • Holds film in the scanner transparency adapter´s "sweet spot" for better performance
  • No annoying dust or fibers like often produced by ragboard and cardboard based holders
  • No magnetic materials used in the construction that could potentially affect a scanner´s performance
  • Accepts 120 and 220 films that meet the ANSI width standards
  • Durable construction that is professionally computer cut using highly accurate laser technology
    • Solid construction – heavy 4mm+ total thickness
    • Handsome matte finish on upper side
  • Costs $24.95

Elpida Digital Consumer Division unveils its first memory chips

The Digital Consumer Division of Japanese Elpida announced its first products – 128Mbit SDRAM chips "adapted" for DVD players/recorders, video servers and printers.

EDS1216AAxx

According to company specialists, this division will provide more flexibility to meet the consumer demand and develop special memory meeting the existing requirements, including small size and low energy consumption.

Two unveiled series — EDS1216AAxx, EDS1216Caxx – are organized 8Mx16 and require 3.3V and 2.5V voltage reducing energy consumption by 40%. Chips are made using 0.11µm process and feature 113MHz clock speed. New chips are suitable for System-in-Package (SiP) and/or MCP solutions. They can have 54-pin FBGA (8x8mm) or the standard 54-pin TSOP standardized by JEDEC.

SiS755FX: a new chipset for Socket 939 AMD Athlon 64 FX processors

Yesterday evening SiS announced its SiS755FX chipset — world-first fully supporting 939-pin AMD Athlon 64 FX with 1GHz HyperTransport bus, according to the press release.

SiS755FX bases on SiS HyperStreaming technology, supports AGP 8X, and is interconnected with SiS964 Southbridge via MuTIOL 1G.

SiS755FX key specs:

  • AMD Athlon 64 FX support
  • 2 x Serial ATA 1.0 ports, RAID 0, 1, JBOD
  • Int. 6-ch. AC97 Hollywood 3D codec
  • ACR (Advanced Communications Riser)
  • Int. LAN 10/100Mbps

As usual for all SiS models, a whole chipset family will be offered: SiS760 with integrated graphics, basic SiS755FX, and another discrete solution — SiS755.
