Microsoft Xbox and NVIDIA: no more pricing discords

NVIDIA and Microsoft together announced that they succeeded in extrajudicial procedure of solving disputable questions regarding pricing of graphics, audio and comm chips shipped by NVIDIA for X-box consoles.

Besides solving pricing discords about the current chip shipments launched in April 2002, both companies announced partnership prolongation for further Xbox price reduction. According to NVIDIA, all the details will be presented at the quarterly press conference scheduled to February 13th.

Intel Centrino to be announced on March 12th

According to Dow Jones Business News, on March 12th Intel plans to officially announce its new Centrino mobile platform.

According to provisional data, new processors will feature 1.6GHz and higher clock rates, IEEE802.11b WLAN interface. Initial prices for Centrino-based notebooks are expected to range from $1250 to $3000.

ALPS presents IEEE802.11a/b dual-range comm modules

ALPS announced volume production of UGJ comm modules supporting two WLAN standards — IEEE802.11a (5GHz, up to 54Mbps) and IEEE802.11b (2.4GHz, up to 11Mbps). Modules will be produced in two variants: Mini-PCI Type III-B and PCMCIA cards.

New cards support AES and WEP encryption with 40-, 104- and 128-bit keys, are compatible with European TPC and DFS standards and with Japanese 4.9GHz range.

Dimensions of Mini-PCI modules are 59.6x45.0x3.4 mm, of PCMCIA cards – 119.0x54.0x5.0 mm. Volume shipments of both card types are expected in April, MSRP of both modules is about $400. In the nearest future the company plans to update UGJ series with IEEE802.11g solutions.

Leadtek releases two new mATX boards on nForce2

Leadtek released specs and photos of two new µATX motherboard on NVIDIA nForce 2.

K7NCR18GM bases on nForce2 IGP + nForce2 MCP (GeForce 4MX graphics); K7NCR18DM – on discrete nForce2 SPP + nForce2 MCP. Other features are similar: Socket A AMD Athlon / XP / Barton / Duron with 200/266/333MHz FSB, 3 DIMM sockets (up to 3Gb PC2100, PC2700, PC3200, including dual-channel DDR SDRAM), AGP 8x slot, 3 PCI slots, LAN, USB 2.0 ports, optional SPDIF. Boards support CPU/memory clock, Vcore, Vmem setting, and O.T.S. CPU overheating protection.

Sony announces new semiconductor laser diodes for CD/DVD drives

Sony announced new semiconductor lasers for CD/DVD drives. They feature two body variants, 5.6mm and 3mm in diameter, and different power: SLD6461VL (5.6mm, 215mW CD, 100mW DVD), SLD6461VLT (the same, but 3mm), SLD6361VL (5.6mm, 7mW CD, 100mW DVD) and SLD6261VLT (3mm, 215mW CD, 5mW DVD). Prices for new diodes range from 2000 to 3500 yens (about $16.5-29).

Diodes are made using the special hybride technology that lets situate all necessary elements in such a small body. 784nm waves are used in the CD mode, 658nm waves – in the DVD mode.

Leadtek WinFast A300 Ultra TD: new graphics on NVIDIA GeForce FX

Leadtek, one of the most consistent NVIDIA partners, prepares to release new WinFast A300 Ultra TD graphics card on GeForce FX GPU.

WinFast A300 Ultra TD

Pity, no specs have been disclosed yet (except for 128Mb DDR II).

Prices for 256Mbit DDR SDRAM make a reduction record

According to online DRAM eXchange, yesterday wholesale prices for 256Mbit DDR SDRAM chips reduced to a record-breaking low $3.90 mark, for the first time below $4.

A year ago, prices for 256Mbit DDR SDRAM were floating at about $7.46 and have even been rasing to $9 in H1 2002. Analysts say the reason for reduction is the significantly increased shipments from Korean Samsung Electronics and a number of Taiwanese makers.

Analysts think that DDR SDRAM prices will be stable enough in the near future. Now they expect DDR SDRAM demand and prices reduction to continue in April-May.
