Sony announces new semiconductor laser diodes for CD/DVD drives
Sony announced new semiconductor lasers for CD/DVD drives. They feature two body variants, 5.6mm and 3mm in diameter, and different power: SLD6461VL (5.6mm, 215mW CD, 100mW DVD), SLD6461VLT (the same, but 3mm), SLD6361VL (5.6mm, 7mW CD, 100mW DVD) and SLD6261VLT (3mm, 215mW CD, 5mW DVD). Prices for new diodes range from 2000 to 3500 yens (about $16.5-29).
Diodes are made using the special hybride technology that lets situate all necessary elements in such a small body. 784nm waves are used in the CD mode, 658nm waves – in the DVD mode.
