Sony to offer its CCDs to the mobile market
According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun, in the nearest future Sony plans to launch the production of CCDs for cellular phone digital cameras. Until now Sony, having about 60% of the global CCD market, has been shipping matrices for digital photo and video cameras. Sanyo Electric and Sharp remain the largest cellular CCD suppliers controlling about 80% of Japanese digital photo-enabled mobile handsets. Resolutions of most CCDs in this market hasn’t exceeded 310,000 pixels. Sony plans to offer a new standard for defining about 1mp resolutions.
In Spring Sony Semiconductor Kyushu will ship 1mp CCDs for mobile handsets. The initial output of Kumamoto Technology Center facility is expected to make about 100,000 units per month.
According to Japanese press, the mobile market currently experiences a real boom, about 30% of handsets feature digital cameras and CCD demand grows with time. So, Sony appeared in due time in the right place. Company investments of 25 billion yens are expected to make total mobile, digital photo, and video camera CCD production volumes grow from the current 4.6 million to 7.2 million.
