Sony introduces HDPS-M1 for data storage

Sony announced the new data storage solution primarily for digital photographers, HDPS-M1, that will go on sale on June 18. The device combines flash card reader with a hard drive (2.5" 40GB).

The device is naturally "specialized" for Sony flash media, including Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo, and also for CF (Type I/II/Microdrive). But theoretically CF slot enables support for other card types via respective adapters.

Sized 135x92x30mm, the novelty weighs 300g. It powers from both Li-Ion battery and AC adapter. The battery provides 1 hour of operation and requires 4 hours to charge.

SanDisk 256MB Wi-Fi SD: no Palm OS expected

SanDisk released its new 256MB Wi-Fi and SD hybrids designed for devices with SDIO slots operating under Microsoft Pocket PC 2002, Pocket PC 2003, or Windows Mobile 2003. Situation with OS support almost doesn´t differ from that of late January, when the company promised to release Palm OS 5 driver only in Q2. SanDisk is still promising... Cards are to be shipped from late June on with MSRP of $129.

As for flash features, they don´t differ much from standard. Wireless support at that covers WEP, 802.1x, PSK and WPA. According to the press release, the development was primarily focused on reducing leakage current of host device batteries. Another benefit is that a separate Wi-Fi card and a 256MB card cost more than the new hybrid, so you can save.

Together with the card, the company introduced 6-in-1 reader supporting Secure Digital, Multimedia Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, xD Picture Card, Smart Media with MSRP of about $30.

We are currently testing V-Stream Xpert TV-PVR 883 TV tuner from Taiwanese Kworld Computer Co., Ltd..

The bundle is rather standard:

  • Tuner itself
  • Remote
  • Remote´s IrDA receiver
  • MiniDIN 8-pin adapter for external media sources
  • Audio cable
  • Latch for low-profile cases
  • Manuals
  • Drivers and software CD

Surprisingly, there´s no FM antenna in the standard bundle. But "instead" there´s nice Honest Technology´s PVR-PLUS software (also bundled with Manli USB TV 2.0 and DVD2Go MPB680).

The radio unit is marked TVision TNF-9831-R/DFF (the same as in Transcend USB2.0 TV-Box).

And 10-bit Conexant CX2388x ADCs (CX23883-19 in this case) is more usual for a higher-class products.

Interesting features include:

  • MTS, EIAJ, A2, Nicam stereo support
  • Video on desktop
  • MPEG4 (DivX and Microsoft MPEG4) support
  • SRPO (Schedule-Recording in PC Power-Off Mode)

As usual, more details are to be described in the coming up review.
