AMD releases Geode processors with new ratings
Geode processors (National Semiconductor) that haven´t been heard of for a long time, now are revived by AMD that has purchased National and promised to introduce several low-power x86 processors. Today it kept its word and released AMD Geode NX 1500@6W (1GHz, 6W; on the photo below) and AMD Geode NX 1750@14W (1.4GHz, 14W) solutions that will be showcased at Computex in Taipei.

Note the model names that include power consumption. According to the new rating, 400MHz AMD Geode GX2 is now AMD Geode GX 533@1.1W. It´s supplemented by 333MHz Geode GX 466@0.9W and 366MHz Geode 500@1.0W.

Unclear ratings (533 for 400MHz, 500 for 366MHz and 466 for 333MHz) are explained in AMD´s press release and are actually results obtained by Synchromesh Computing testing (see this and this). Senior models (Geode NX 1500@6W and Geode NX 1750@14W) were tested on Geode NX DB1500 motherboard (above), while junior models were checked on Geode GX DB533 board.
AMD positions Geode processors for low-power embedded systems, including industral devices, Windows XP based mobile products, telecomms and sales equipment.
In over 10,000-unit quantities processors and motherboards will cost:
- Geode GX 466@0.9W – $26.50
- Geode GX 500@1.0W – $29.10
- Geode GX 533@1.1W – $32.75
- Geode NX 1500@6W — $65.00
- Geode NX 1750@14W — $55.00
- Geode GX DB533 – $650.00
- Geode NX DB1500 – $500.00
Kingston launches MMC 4.0 media
According to Kingston Technology, the company launched the new MultiMediaCard 4.0 cards that provide higher performance. Novelties will be showcased at Computex in Taipei on June 1-5, 2004 along with Skymedi SK6802 MMC 4.0 controller.

Initially Kingston is going to release 256MB and 512MB MMC 4.0 cards (today only 128MB MMC are available; on the photo) increasing capacity up to 2GB in the future. MMC 4.0 media supports 20MB/s read and 17MB/s write speeds, features x1, x4 and x8 bit interfaces, requires 1.8V and 3V voltages and is backward compatible with previous MultiMediaCard media and controllers.
