Soltek SL-865Pro-775 motherboard on i865PE for Socket 775 processors seen in Japanese retail Leitch releases its new DTP for on-the-fly MPEG2 processing Sony obtains license to IBM Power architecture NEC LOOKPAL: a PDA with a 8.4" LCD and a CD-ROM Soltek SL-865Pro-775 motherboard on i865PE for Socket 775 processors seen in Japanese retail Soltek demonstrated enviable swiftness: SL-865Pro-775 motherboard for yet unreleased LGA 775 processors, first introduced at CeBIT 2004, is already showcased in Japanese stores to go on sale later this month.
The uncommonness of this novelty is that it was released more than early. Note that SL-865Pro-775 bases on Intel 865PE + ICH5 chipset. It seems nothing else but a bold "sally", though it´s always nice to attract attention long before certified Grantsdale (i915) and Alderwood (i925) releases.
SL-865Pro-775 supports P4 with 800/533/400 MHz FSB, features 4 x 184-pin sockets for up to 4GB of dual-channel unregistered non-ECC DDR 400/333/266 DRAM, AGP 8x/4x, 5 x PCI, ATA133/RAID IDE on Promise PDC20579, 4 x Serial ATA, (ICH5 + Promise PDC20579), 2 x IEEE1394. Leitch releases its new DTP for on-the-fly MPEG2 processing Leitch Technology released its new processor for on-the-fly MPEG2 processing without the need of forward and backward encoding Digital Turnaround Processor (DTP).
Leitch DTP solutions are designed for studio and digital broadcasting equipment (namely Leitch AgileVision series which flowchart is below). Using DTP processors you can quickly overlay images, create special effects in real time or during a live broadcast. The novelty has DTV signal controls and compression features and can manage and distribute low-speed streams between stations consequently transforming them into a HDTV signal. The new processor is designed for QNX Neutrino real time OS.
Sony obtains license to IBM Power architecture IBM officially informed that it had granted the license to its Power architecture to Sony. Sony has been planning to use IBM developments in its consumer electronics for a long time, so now it can officially develop its own systems-on-chip based on IBM Power. The current IBM Power processors are made using copper conductors and SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator) and work in various devices from mobile handsets to servers. Currently the most interesting representative of this family is the 90nm Power PC 970FX for use in new Apple G5 systems.
NEC LOOKPAL: a PDA with a 8.4" LCD and a CD-ROM It´s hard to refer NEC´s LOOKPAL introduced today to a particular device class. The novelty bases on 400MHz Intel PXA255 processors natural for PDAs, has 32MB RAM and 64MB ROM, 640x480x65K LCD just like a usual PDA... But at the same time, other features make it closer to a single-spindle ultralight notebook: 8.4" display diagonal, CD-ROM drive, LAN, 243x161x34mm size and 1.1kg weight. Such a technological hybrid.
NEC itself positions LOOKPAL as a personal CD-ROM-equpped terminal for Web and image browsing, music playback, etc. The device features a Li-Ion battery that provides up to 2 hours of operation, supports HTML/PDF/JPEG/BMP and Word/Excel/PowerPoint browsing, and operates under a Linux clone. In Japan the model costs ¥68,250 (about $620). Source: PC Watch
