PRO/Wireless 2200BG: a new Intel Centrino component supporting IEEE 802.11b/g

Following its own roadmap, Intel introduced a new component for its Centrino platform — Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG adapter — supporting 802.11b and higher-speed 802.11g.

Being "Wi-Fi CERTIFIED" already, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG supports Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and can be software upgraded to the new security standards, e.g. implied by 802.11i. Designed as a usual mini-PCI card, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG bases on Intel´s proprietary comm and RF chips. The adapter is bundled with PROSet for Wireless software simplifying network settings and traffic management.

Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG brief specs:

  • Model: WM3B2200BG
  • Size: 44.60x59.75x4.9mm
  • Weight: 12g
  • Antenna: dual integrated
  • Interface: MiniPCI Type III
  • LEDs: Link, Activity
  • Standards: IEEE 802.11b/g
  • Range: 2.4GHz
  • Throughput: up to 54 Mbps IEEE 802.11g or up to 11Mbps 802.11b
  • Encryption: 802.1X, WEP, WPA, upgradable to AES
  • Intel Wireless Coexistence System for Bluetooth compatibility
  • Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME)
  • OS: Microsoft Windows XP (Professional, Home, Tablet), 2000
  • WHQL certified

The first Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG adapters are expected in Centrino-based notebooks in Q1 2004. Within these weeks such models should be presented by Japanese Fujitsu, Matsushita Electric, NEC, Sony, and Toshiba. In over 10,000-unit quantities Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG adapter will cost $25.

SiS965L: a new Southbridge with PCI-Express support

SiS, continuing the development of integrated Southbridges, yesterday announced SiS965L solution with PCI-Express support.

The new SiS965L Southbridge is compatible with the existing Northbridges, including SiS661FX, SiS648FX, SiS655FX, SiS655TX, SiS748, SiS755, SiS755FX, and SiS760. It provides the support of 2 x PCI-Express, 8 x USB 2.0, 8-channel audio, 10/100 LAN, 2 x Serial ATA (hot plug), and 4 x PATA.

Soltek unveils its first graphics cards on ATI GPUs

The general enthusiasm of extending the list of GPU partners touched Soltek as well. Formerly only the NVIDIA partner, today Soltek unveiled its first three cards on ATI GPUs. For the sake of justice I must state that the company selected the most safe variants — lower-end and cheps ATI Radeon 9600 SE (SL-9600S-PD) and ATI Radeon 9200 SE (SL-9200S-PT, SL-9200S-CT).

Brief specs:

Model SL-9600S-PD SL-9200S-PT /
SL-9200S-CT
GPU ATI Radeon 9600 SE ATI Radeon 9200 SE

GPU clock 325MHz 200MHz
Memory clock 400MHz (200MHz DDR) 333MHz (166MHz DDR)
Interfaces VGA, DVI-I, TV-Out VGA, DVI-I, TV-Out

Another mystery of our Hardware Museum

Inspired by the popularity of our last riddle, Andrew Vorobyev, the Editor of our Video section and the keeper of the Hardware Museum, continued to literally uncover processor rarities.

Today riddle is some easier, however I don´t think that everyone will at once recognize this chip and its clock speed. Give it a try! :-)

P.S. Please mail to answers to Andrew Vorobyev.

ASUS resumes desktop case business

ASUSTeK Computer resumed its desktop case business promising to focus on quality, performance, and lifetime.

Initially we should see ASUS TA2xx and ASUS TM2xx case series that are scheduled for shipments in February.

Below we introduce you the first photos of ASUS TA2xx series:
