Maui reference design or bsquare Power Handheld

bsquare, surfing the top of the technological progress wave, announced Maui reference design, called Power Handheld. It features: 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA250, 64MB RAM, 32MB flash memory, 4-inch LCD, supporting 640È480@16bpp, Secure Digital slot, supporting SDIO. Besides, there are two design variants: with built-in GSM module (900/1800 or 900/1900 MHz) and GPRS Multislot 8 Class B.

With such features Power Handheld competes with O2 XDA/T-Mobile MDA and HP Jornada 928 WDA, however, it has a larger screen, supporting better resolution, (thus weighing 280 g) and works under Windows CE .NET 4.1 instead of Pocket PC 2002. Besides, there´s a special 2È zoom button for small symbols or images (a rather clever solution, as 4-inch 640È480 screen provides very small symbols).

Other features are: 140È87È19.5 mm dimensions, claimed up to 3 weeks of idle battery operation, 135 hours in idle mode in GSM networks, 3-7 hours of talking and up to 3 hours of GPRS operation.

As for the software, there´s a standard Pocket PC 2002 kit: Pocket Inbox, Pocket Contacts, Pocket Calendar and Pocket Word, and proprietary Spreadsheet instead of Pocket Excel. But unlike Pocket PC, there´s Internet Explorer 5.5 with Windows Media Player, Macromedia Flash, Insignia Java JVM and PDF browser. Naturally, it supports SMS and Microsoft Messenger.

The trademark of Power Handheld is still unknown, but the design itself is rather interesting.

LPC flash memory from Atmel

Atmel announced a family of Low Pin Count (LPC) flash chips. 8 Mbit AT49LL080 are directly connected to LPC bus in AMD, VIA, SiS and other chipsets and can be used in mobo BIOS.

Atmel is soft organized as universal 64KB sectors and supports byte-serial programming and sector rewrite. Chips are packaged into 40-pin TSOP and 32-pin PLCC.

In 10,000-unit and larger consignments chips cost $3.50 per unit.

KT4 Ultra: MSI launches its own DDR400 certification

ASUS BLUE MAGIC and SpaceLink B&W: how it works

Today ("Photo of the day: ASUS P4PE board on i845PE") you´ve already seen the new P4PE board from ASUS and noticed an interesting blue PCI slot. ASUS calls it BLUE MAGIC. The company plans to implement it into new motherboards.

BLUE MAGIC works like a usual PCI slot, but an additional wireless ASUS SpaceLink B&W card enables it to support three popular wireless interfaces at once: 802.11a, 802.11b, and Bluetooth.

We have a chance to introduce the first photo of ASUS SpaceLink B&W card for BLUE MAGIC along with its antenna:

Despite the low quality, I guess its enough to get the idea. You must admit, it´s a rather convenient and universal wireless connectivity solution for your PC.

RADEON 9700 PRO 128 MB cards are incompatible with some AGP 8x mobos

On its support page ATI warned that its new RADEON 9700 PRO 128MB graphics cards are incompatible with some AGP 8x mobos. Some bundles do not even initialize and boot.

Naturally, it doesn´t touch all AGP 8x motherboards. According to some responses, lowering AGP clock rate sometimes solves the problem.

Currently ATI specialist work on the problem. Users are recommended to visit the mentioned page from time to time for possible solutions.

Anyway, all having problems can contact ATI Customer Service. Information, required for help, is provided on the same page (personal data, model, mobo revision, RADEON 9700 PRO 128MB serial, power supply data, AGP clock rate and problem description).

Naturally, most problems might be solved by a simple firmware upgrade. However, we advise all owners of RADEON 9700 PRO 128MB who face such problems to wait for the solution. There´s always an outlet.
