Intel Oak Trail Ships Officially SiliconBlue Unveils 40-nm mobileFPGA Roadmap Hynix Introduces High-Performance DDR4 DRAM Intel Oak Trail Ships Officially Confirming preliminary information, Intel launched shipments of the Intel Atom platform codenamed 'Oak Trail' for tablet PCs and netbooks with passive cooling. Each 45-nm Intel Atom Z670 die features CPU and Intel GMA 600 graphics cores as well as a memory controller. Oak Trail advantages include low power consumption (C4/C4E/C6 modes supported), low TDP (3W), and much smaller size. Also, the integrated hardware video decoder supports playback of 1080p content. Speaking of size, an Intel Atom Z670 processor is sized 13.8 x 13.8 mm, which is 60% smaller than a previous-generation Atom (22 x 22 mm). It can work with Windows, Android and MeeGo and supports the improved Intel SpeedStep technology. Aside from the aforementioned processor, the platform includes the Intel SM35 Express chipset, which is 30% smaller than the previous offering and is sized 14 x 14 mm instead of 17 x 17 mm. The chipset features a SATA controller, a USB 2.0 controller (4 ports), Intel HD Audio, HDMI 1.3a, SDIO 2.0 and eMMC 4.3 controller. By capitalizing on Moore's Law, not only the new mobileFPGA platform families will offer reduced power and 30-50-percent increased performance, but it will also provide comprehensive product families comprised of over 15 new devices, all with footprints smaller than 50 mm². ![]() The Los Angeles family incorporates advanced interface support for emerging standards such as SLIMbus and USB-2.0-based HSIC and ULPI, targeting sensor management and port expansion requirements that are being driven by the explosion of sensors and other peripherals in handheld applications. The San Francisco family incorporates 1080p support with HDMI and MIPI interfaces and has been designed for video, multi-display, and high-bandwidth memory interface applications, targeting the convergence of video and image content being simultaneously viewed on home and handheld devices. More details regarding SiliconBlue's 40-nm-based mobileFPGA devices will be announced in Q2'2011. The device works at 2400 Mbps which is also 80% faster than the 1333 Mbps of DDR3. Modules operate at 1.2V and process up to 19.2GB of data per second with a 64-bit I/O. DDR4 DRAM meets the JEDEC standard and the modules are designed for micro servers. Hynix plans to start volume production of DDR4 in the second half of 2012. According to the market research firm iSuppli, the market portion of the DDR4 DRAM is expected to increase from 5% in 2013 to over 50% in 2015, and this kind of memory should become mainstream. The demand for DDR3 DRAM is expected to reach its peak in 2012 with 71% market share and should decrease to 49% in 2014. Source: Hynix Semiconductor
