Intel Oak Trail Ships Officially
Confirming preliminary information, Intel launched shipments of the Intel Atom platform codenamed 'Oak Trail' for tablet PCs and netbooks with passive cooling.
Each 45-nm Intel Atom Z670 die features CPU and Intel GMA 600 graphics cores as well as a memory controller. Oak Trail advantages include low power consumption (C4/C4E/C6 modes supported), low TDP (3W), and much smaller size. Also, the integrated hardware video decoder supports playback of 1080p content.
Speaking of size, an Intel Atom Z670 processor is sized 13.8 x 13.8 mm, which is 60% smaller than a previous-generation Atom (22 x 22 mm). It can work with Windows, Android and MeeGo and supports the improved Intel SpeedStep technology.
Aside from the aforementioned processor, the platform includes the Intel SM35 Express chipset, which is 30% smaller than the previous offering and is sized 14 x 14 mm instead of 17 x 17 mm. The chipset features a SATA controller, a USB 2.0 controller (4 ports), Intel HD Audio, HDMI 1.3a, SDIO 2.0 and eMMC 4.3 controller.
