3Dconnexion Launches Its Most Powerful 3D Mouse Ever: the SpacePilot PRO

To meet demands of design engineers working in 3D applications, 3Dconnexion announced the new SpacePilot PRO. The company's flagship 3D mouse is designed to deliver advanced control of 3D models, easier access to features of professional 3D applications, fewer interruptions in the design workflow, and improved comfort. Specifically, the SpacePilot PRO features a new color LCD Workflow Assistant, second-generation QuickView Navigation technology, Intelligent Function keys, and an improved design for enhanced comfort and control.

SpacePilot PRO 3D mouse features:

  • LCD Workflow Assistant: The color LCD lists function-key assignments and provides at-a-glance access to Microsoft Outlook e-mail, calendar and task lists. Through 3Dconnexion's open software architecture, the workflow assistant can be further customized.
  • Advanced MCAD Navigation: Five new dual-function QuickView Navigation keys provide one-touch access to the following views: top and bottom, right and left, front and back, two isometric views, and 90-degree view rotation of any view either clockwise or counter-clockwise – for a total of 32 views. A short press activates a key's primary view command, while pressing and holding a key activates a secondary view command. In addition, new Navigation Setting keys offer simplified and customizable control, allowing to turn pan-and-zoom, rotation and one-axis control on or off, making it easier to define navigation settings for certain work modes.
  • Intelligent Function Keys: Five new fully customizable, dual-function keys offer one-touch access to 10 frequently used commands within any supported 3D application. The SpacePilot PRO automatically detects the active application and assigns appropriate function keys – whether default or customized. The color LCD denotes the function key assignments and application mode so engineers can easily identify commands and design states.
  • Comfort: The SpacePilot PRO has a new sculpted, soft-coated wrist rest that positions the hand in relation to the controller cap to support a balanced workflow. The micro-precision six-degrees-of-freedom sensor allows for fingertip control with minimal effort from the arm, wrist and hand, while frequently used commands are conveniently positioned at your fingertips. The intuitive and symmetrical layout of the function keys makes the device usable with either hand.

3Dconnexion provides 3D mice that are supported by more than 130 of today's 3D applications, including Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER, NX and Solid Edge.

The SpacePilot PRO is backed by a three-year warranty, and is currently available at a suggested retail price of $499. IBM Announces Advanced 28-Nanometer, Low-Power Semiconductor Technology

IBM, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Infineon Technologies, Samsung Electronics, and STMicroelectronics have defined and are jointly developing a 28-nanometer (nm), high-k metal gate (HKMG), low-power bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process technology.

The low-power, 28nm technology platform can provide power-performance and time-to-market advantages for producers of a broad range of power-sensitive mobile and consumer electronics applications, including the fast-growing mobile Internet device market segment. The favorable leakage characteristics of the HKMG technology result in optimized battery life for the next generation of mobile products.

A 28nm low-power technology evaluation kit was previously made available in December 2008 to early access clients, followed by release in March 2009 of an evaluation kit for open access to the general marketplace. Early risk production is anticipated in the second half of 2010.

Already working with clients on 32nm low-power technology, the alliance has gained valuable experience in the implementation of HKMG technology, and is offering a migration path from 32nm to 28nm technology. Clients can begin their designs today in 32nm HKMG technology and then move to 28nm technology for density and power advantages, without the need for a major redesign.

Preliminary results working with early access clients and partners indicate that the 28nm technology platform can provide a 40 percent performance improvement and a more than 20 percent reduction in power -- all in a chip that is half the size -- compared with 45nm technology. The high-k metal gate implementation allows one of the industry's smallest SRAM cells at 0.120 square microns, with low minimum voltage operation and competitive performance, leakage and stability.
