ASUS Rolls Out Slim And Elegant LS201 LCD Monitor

ASUS has introduced a new slim model, the LS201 20" LCD monitor – to cater to the needs of trendy 3C users. Being the RedDot Design Award Winner 2007, this LCD monitor showcases an exterior piano-painted black chassis, fine hair-lined aluminum details, a unique base that exudes a LED light and a diamond-cut glass surface of 9H hardness for protection from damages or pollution. It also incorporates wide viewing angles, ASCR (ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio) 2000:1 and ASUS exclusive Splendid Video Intelligence Technology.

The LS201 incorporates a half-thinner panel than generic LCD monitors to display an aesthetically slim style – complementing the simple and clean-lined glossy black design. By a simple press of the side button, the LS201 can further show space aesthetics in different angles by being adjusted to apply VESA wall-mounted functions with the adapter. The unique "Light-in-Motion" LED lights on the base creates a soothing effect and distinct feel to the atmosphere while in operation. A rational blue light is activated while powered on, and an orange glow signals the standby mode.

The LS201 specially adopts a protective surface with the characteristics of 9H high hardness, which lets the panel be protected against scratches and pollution. The anti-reflection coating on the glass allows superb light transmittance (over 96%, which is 11% higher than generic glass) and anti-reflection capabilities (below 2% reflections) to deliver clear images without distortions. This integration is perfect for public demonstrations and usage by children without an additional protective filter. Additionally, it is easy to keep clean by just utilizing the bundled cleaning cloth.

The LS201 incorporates 1400x1050 SXGA+ high resolution, 5ms response time and dual video inputs (DVI-D and D-sub). The ASCR (ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio Technology) provides the high contrast ratio of 2000:1, which can dynamically adjust contrast between black and white – creating sharper and more stereoscopic images especially during video and movies.

Splendid Video Intelligence Technology, found exclusively in ASUS solutions, detects activation and usage of video applications and automatically optimizes image quality for the best visual results. Besides the five modes (Standard, Game, Theater, Scenery and Night), the innovative technology also enables the selection of three skin tone options for high-quality image in different video applications. Watching videos with computers and LCD monitors are now as good as on the best TVs, especially with the ASUS LS201's large screen.

Specifications:

  • 20" TFT-LCD panel
  • Resolution: 1400x1050 SXGA+
  • 300nits brightness
  • ASCR (ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio) 2000:1
  • 16.7 million display colors
  • 170°(H)/160° (V) wide viewing angles
  • 9H hardness protection glass surface (>96% light transmittance)
  • Splendid Video Intelligence Technology

NEC, JST, RIKEN Successfully Demonstrate World's First Controllably Coupled Qubits

NEC Corporation, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) have together successfully demonstrated the world's first quantum bit (qubit) circuit that can control the strength of coupling between qubits. Technology achieving control of the coupling strength between qubits is vital to the realization of a practical quantum computer, and has been long awaited in the scientific field.

The quantum computer, when it is finally brought to fruition, is expected to far surpass the capabilities of even the most modern of today's supercomputers. Actual computing in a quantum computer is carried out by manipulating the quantum state of qubits in time sequence by external controls. To achieve such manipulation, it is necessary to control the: 1. States of individual qubits, 2. States of two qubits (logic operation), and 3. Ability to turn on/off the coupling between qubits.

NEC, JST, and RIKEN have already announced successful development of key technologies for the world's first solid-state qubit and the world's first two-qubit logic gate, based on solid-state technology that excels in its ability to integrate qubits. Following these achievements, the research group addressed the controllable coupling of qubits as the next logical step in realization of a practical quantum computer. Their new research result represents the world's first successful demonstration of controllably coupled qubits.

To date, the coupling of qubits has been difficult to control. In order to realize this control, the research group devised an original mechanism that employs another qubit in between the two qubits for coupling. The coupling qubit functions as a non-linear transformer that is able to turn on and off the magnetic coupling between the two qubits, and on/off control is achieved simply by inputting a microwave. Moreover, coupling operation has been achieved without shortening the lifetime of each qubit. Scalability is also realized through the repetition of coupled two-qubit units - a feature necessary for future quantum computers.

To demonstrate the operation feasibility of the controllable coupling scheme, the research group employed a coupled two-qubit system, the smallest quantum logic unit, to carry out a multi-quantum control experiment involving the turning on and off of the coupling. As a result, a simple quantum protocol has been successfully demonstrated, allowing controllable coupling for the execution of quantum algorithms.

In the near future, NEC, JST, and RIKEN, plan to implement a larger-scale, more elaborate quantum computation, aiming for the realization of a practical quantum computer.

OCZ Announces First AM2 Optimized Memory Kit

OCZ Technology Group unveiled an original memory kit for AMD enthusiasts and power users. The new PC2-5400 Titanium modules were designed exclusively for the AMD AM2 platform and are custom-tailored to the extended column address range of the AM2 memory controller. With a doubled page size, access penalties are reduced to improve system performance. Used on the AM2 platform, the architecture of these modules is particularly beneficial for large CAD model processing and memory intense graphics applications such as filters in Adobe Photoshop or video processing.

With 11 column address bit support by the AM2 memory controller, the number of addresses in each row or page can be as high as 2048 individual entries for a page size of 16 Kbit. Unlike modules based on standard 10-bit column address chips with an “8k” page size, the new Titanium AM2 Special modules take advantage of the AM2 controller’s feature set and provide a single rank solution with 2GB density using “16k” pages. This allows the controller to stay “in page” twice as long compared to standard memory architectures, thereby achieving improved performance.

The PC2-5400 AM2 Special modules will be initially available in 4GB (2x2048MB) dual-channel kits and are optimized for 64-bit operating systems. Each module is 100% hand-tested for quality assurance and compatibility and features high-quality, titanium-mirrored XTC (Xtreme Thermal Convection) heatspreaders.

Specs:

  • 667MHz DDR2
  • 5-5-5-15
  • Available in 4GB (2x2GB) Dual Channel Kits (P/N: OCZ2T667AM4GK)
  • Unbuffered
  • Titanium XTC Heatspreader
  • OCZ Lifetime Warranty
  • 1.8 - 2.0 Volts
  • 240 Pin DIMM
  • Designed for AMD AM2 Platforms
