Philips Presents New Nexperia Cellular System Solution For Mid-range Phones

Royal Philips Electronics has announced a new member of its Nexperia Cellular System Solution family. The Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210 GSM/GPRS/EDGE platform incorporates a hardware and software design optimized for multimedia performance that eliminates the need for a separate co-processor.

The novelty is enhanced with Philips LifeVibes software products, supporting e-AAC+ stereo audio content, that provides end users with a music equalizer and high quality FM stereo recording. On the imaging side, it offers embedded digital camera interface with a resolution of 1.3 Megapixels (or higher definition with a video processor), as well as QCIF video recording and playback at 30 fps. For simplicity reasons, all functions are manageable by USB connection.

The Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210 is available now.

The Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 5210 is composed of a true quad-band class 12-capable EDGE chipset, including:

  • Philips Nexperia cellular baseband (PNX5230)
  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE RF transceiver (UAA3588E)
  • Power amplifier front-end module with integrated antenna switch (BGY505)
  • Power management unit (PCF50611) with main and backup battery charging
  • Software compatibility with the existing EDGE Nexperia cellular system solution 6120
  • Reference design and all tools needed to deliver a complete handset solution.
  • Hardware extensions include FM radio (TEA5761UK), Bluetooth 1.2 module (BGB204) and QCIF+ display (P9165)

The solution also incorporates mono interference cancellation (MIC) technology, which uses advanced software-based techniques to improve transmission integrity, decreasing the number of dropped calls and increasing data rate.

ASIX Offers New Non-PCI Ethernet Controller

ASIX today announced the sample availability of its newly developed non-PCI Ethernet controller for the embedded networking applications - the AX88796A.

The AX88796A, Non-PCI 8/16-bit 10/100M Fast Ethernet Controller with Embedded PHY, is a high performance and highly integrated local CPU bus Ethernet Controller with embedded 10/100Mbps PHY/Transceiver and 8K*16 bit SRAM. The AX88796A supports both 8 bit and 16 bit local CPU interfaces, which include MCS-51 series, 80186 series, MC68K series CPU, and ISA bus. The AX88796A implements both 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet function based on IEEE802.3/IEEE802.3u LAN standards. The AX88796A also provides an extra IEEE802.3u compliant media-independent interface (MII) to support other media applications. Using the MII interface, the Home LAN PHY type of media can also be supported. The programming of AX88796A is very simple and compatible with NE2000, so the users can port the software drivers to any system quickly and easily.

Intel Opens 65nm, 300mm High-Volume Wafer Manufacturing Facility In Arizona

Intel has re-opened an advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in Chandler, Ariz., converting it to a 300mm, 65nm process factory. Called Fab 12, the factory is Intel’s second volume-production fab using 65nm process technology produced on the 300mm. It is also company's most technologically advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing plant building multi-core microprocessors.

The Fab 12 conversion project, which began in 2004 and cost roughly $2 billion, was completed in approximately 18 months. Fab 12 is Intel’s fifth fab using 300mm wafers. Intel’s other facilities that manufacture using 300mm wafers are Fab 11X in New Mexico, D1D and D1C in Oregon, and Fab 24 in Ireland.

Fab 12’s re-opening is the latest in a string of six Intel announcements regarding re-investment in its U.S. manufacturing sites. In total, the announcements made in 2005 reflect a combination of more than $4 billion of new U.S.-based manufacturing expansion announced this year and completion of this $2 billion investment announced in 2004. These investments will add over 2,000 jobs (not including construction jobs).

Atmel Unveils New 2.5M Pixel CMOS Industrial Camera

Atmel announced the introduction of a new member of the ATMOS area scan CMOS camera family dedicated to industrial machine-vision applications. The additional members ATMOS 2M30 and ATMOS 2M60 are fast CMOS area scan cameras able to work in 8-, 10- or 12-bit ranges. Specific CommCama software, also developed by Atmel, renders camera configuration easy.

ATMOS 2M30 and 2M60 are composed of a 2.5 million pixels CMOS sensor. The region of interest (R.O.I.) allows the end-user to implement infinite resolutions and to increase frame rate such as: 48 fps full resolution at 2.5M pixels, 60 fps at 2M pixels and 160 fps in VGA format (640X480 pixels) for the 2M60 model (half-speed for the 2M30). Furthermore, the ATMOS 2M30 and ATMOS 2M60 cameras comprises an electronic shutter and Camera Link interface suitable for those wanting to upgrade from analog to digital modes while offering cost effective solutions.

The two ATMOS cameras are delivered in a 44 mm square section design with a C-mount adapter. It also allows an implementation into multiple configurations. The camera can be uploaded remotely.

Firstly dedicated to machine-vision, ATMOS features various timing modes: free-run, triggered mode, ITC with very fine setting of the shutter signal (0 to 655 ms by steps of 10 us). The dynamic range of this camera (63 dB) is equivalent to the one typically achieved with CCD sensors. The benefit of the dynamic range, with the offset and gain fine tuning, is detection of slight differences of gray levels even in low contrast images. These features are particularly suited for inspection (glass, flat panel display, PCB), robot-guidance, metrology, as well as various applications such as microscopy and surveillance applications.

ATMOS 2M30 and 2M60 provide an easy to use, user friendly Camera Link configuration interface with features such as contrast expansion, Fixed Pattern Noise correction (FPN), and Look Up Table (LUT). ATMOS features five banks of settings: one for factory settings (read only), three for user settings (write/read) and one additional setting that can be locked by the system manufacturer once the system is calibrated. With the CommCam software, the end-user gains easy access to all of the cameras' features such as gain, offset tuning and synchronization mode. It enables automatic identification of the camera range, faster programming, multilingual programming of settings, easy saving process and uploading of firmware for upgrades and customization.

The ATMOS 2M30 and 2M60 cameras are at sample stage now and will enter their production phase in April 2006. Pricing starts at $2500 and $3000 respectively for a quantity of 100 pieces.
