Samsung Electronics And Bang & Olufsen Unveil Serene

A cooperation between Bang & Olufsen and Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Business has resulted in a rather original mobile phone concept - Serene. According to the press release, the idea behind Serene was to create a mobile phone dedicated to one prime purpose: to enable comfortable and convenient communication. The novelty is minimalistic in design, and simple and straightforward in use.

Serene consists of two equal parts that are tied together by an aluminium hinge. The display and microphone are placed in the lower shell in a landscape orientation and the circular keyboard and loudspeaker is placed in the upper shell with a thumb operated wheel in the middle taking care of all primary operations. Accordingly, the colours, fonts, screen format and size have been specially selected with logical operation in mind. The phone has a relatively large, wide-format display. At the same time, restricting the number of features on the handset makes it possible to limit the number of menus, which in turn makes the experience of using Serene both logical and intuitive.

Serene comes with a triangular charger/docking station made in polished anodized aluminium with a cut-out for the phone. If the phone is placed in the docking station or the phone is used in a table mode it can be used as a minilaptop as the display can turn 180 degrees for convenient use in this position as well.

As a special feature for Bang & Olufsen customers, a special DECT docking station is available which enables Serene to synchronise its phonebook with the domestic cordless system of telephones from Bang & Olufsen.

Serene will be launched in Europe, Russia and Ukraine during the 4th quarter of this year. It will be distributed through Bang & Olufsen stores and in select high-end Samsung distribution partners. It will retail in Bang & Olufsen stores for approximately €1100 inclusive of a special Bang & Olufsen DECT accessory and in Samsung retailer partners for approximately €1000 without the DECT accessory.

Samsung's First Symbian Series 60 Based Smartphones Powered By TI's Wireless Technology

Texas Instruments Incorporated announced that Samsung Electronics has selected technology from TI's OMAP platform and Bluetooth solutions for its first Symbian OSTM and Series 60-based smartphones, the SGH-D720 and SGH-D730. Available in either clamshell (D730), or slider (D720) designs, the GSM/GPRS smartphones from Samsung are leveraging TI wireless technology to offer a variety of feature-rich entertainment and productivity applications, including RealOne Player and Bluetooth multi-game and music maker.

TI's OMAP1610 application processor runs Symbian OS for the new Samsung smartphones and powers a full range of features and applications, including a 1.3 megapixel camera with zoom, built-in flash, and camcorder functionality; MP3 Player; and Series 60 applications such as e-mail and synchronization via Bluetooth or SyncML. TI's power-efficient BRF6150 Bluetooth single-chip solution, which is based on TI's DRPTM process technology, seamlessly interfaces to the OMAP platform and provides voice and data connectivity to the new Samsung smartphones.

Samsung's new clamshell handset, the SGH-D730, soon to be followed by the slider version, the SGH-D720, is available in Germany, will roll-out throughout Europe later this year.

GIGABYTE Announces Next Generation ATI Radeon X1000-Series VGA Cards

GIGABYTE announced GV-RX18, GV-RX16 and GV-RX13 series that featuring new 90nm Radeon X1800, X1600 and X1300 GPUs from ATI.

The list of technologies includes ultra-threaded 3D core architecture, support for Microsoft Direct X 9.0 Shader Model 3.0, GIGABYTE's proprietary Turbo Force Technology and Silent-Pipe thermal design. The flag-ship GV-RX18 series also features 512-bit ring-bus memory controller, a new cache design and improved Hyper Z technology. Moreover, there's 3Dc image enhancement technology and support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) that takes advantage of subtle light, texture, and color intricacies.
