OneTouch II — Maxtor´s new hard disk generation

Maxtor introduced the new generation of its external hard disks — OneTouch II — primarily designed for backup purposes (it´s actually all described in the name — one touch to back up). Novelties utilize Dantz Retrospect backup software and support Maxtor DriveLock protection feature.

OneTouch II features also include Mac bootability function, so their owners can make bootable copies of the system.

More features include:

• 7200 rpm (250 GB), 5400 rpm (300 GB)
• 16 MB buffer
• FireWire/USB 2.0
• 9.0 ms average seek
• 41x140x210mm size
• 1.38 kg weight
• MSRP of $380 for 300 GB model and $330 for 250 GB model

According to the press release, more devices are to be introduced this year.

Oki develops ARM9-based USB 2.0 and ATAPI controller

Oki Electric Industry developed a series of single-chip controllers based on ARM946E core — ML696200 — that feature USB 2.0 and ATAPI interfaces. Sampling will start in November this year, while volume production is scheduled to January 2005.

ML696200 series includes ML69Q6203 solution with 512 KB Flash ROM and ROMless ML696201. Until now USB 2.0, ATA/ATAPI and NAND Flash (SmartMedia standard 2000) interfaces were a matter of three different chips, but now Oki has it all in one and developers can create smaller mobile solutions with lower energy consumption.

By the end of this financial year that finishes in March 2006 the company plans to be shipping 400K controllers monthly. They will be mainly intended for digital homes, portable storage and PDAs.

Gigabyte unveils GA-8TRX330-L motherboard on ATI RX330

Gigabyte, according to PC Inpact, has recently updated its website with information on GA-8TRX330-L motherboard on ATI RX330. There´s still not much new to see, because this chipset is a pared-down version of RS350, Radeon 9100 Pro IGP, and doesn´t have built-in graphics.

The model is designed for Pentium 4 Socket 478 with HyperThreading.
