We are now testing a novelty on NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. This time it’s Leadtek´s WinFast A300 Ultra My VIVO. Similar to other GeForce FX 5800 Ultra cards, this one differs from the reference only by the interesting cooling system. According to Andrew Vorobyev, our video editor, "Being very quiet, almost silent, the cooler occupies one slot. This is the best GFFX5800 card of all we have witnessed".

Adtec CUD: a new CF-compatible Flash card

Atech Totalsolution released a Compact USB Disk (CUD) memory card compatible with CompactFlash (CF).

Being smaller than CF by 1/3, the novelty can be used in CF-compatible devices via a special cartridge. CUD can be directly connected to a PC or PDA with a USB cable or adapter without any readers.

Currently, according to The Digitimes, CF solutions possess 54% of the market, followed by Memory Stick (25%), Secure Digital (10%), SmartMedia (8%) and MultiMedia Card (MMC) — 3%.

Legion Hardware reviews Abit BH7

"Unfortunately, unless you really have the right gear hitting a 200MHz (Quad Pumped 800 MHz) FSB is going to be near impossible, though there is no denying the BH7 will get you closer there than most. Naturally, if you are after features such as Gigabit LAN, RAID, Firewire and so on then this won´t be the board for you. Again I must comment on the board’s price at around $90 US, this is amazing value."

StarForce Increases The Level Of Security For PDF Documents

Last week StarForce Technologies, copy protection solutions developer, released StarForce PDF 1.1 for better security of text and graphical content from illegal use and unauthorized access to protected PDF documents with Adobe® products and other applications. The new solution is mainly addressed to creators and publishers of e-Books, e-Zines, encyclopedias, tutorials, lectures, scientific and statistical reports, corporate data, legal documents, and other PDF documents that owners might want to protect. Currently the company offers two different versions of StarForce PDF 1.1: for CD-ROM/DVD-ROM and CD-R. The StarForce DVD-R project is in development.

StarForce PDF 1.1 new features include:

  • Expiration date limitation – Disc expiration date feature. End users will be notified of it in advance, file access being blocked by the protection system later;
  • Viewer options – enables end users to use Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat for viewing protected PDFs;
  • Print screen blocking – Enables PDF owner to protect a document from the content copying, exporting, or saving as an image for OCR restoration;
  • Print file blocking — Enables to permit or denied document printing at the implementation stage.

With all features put into service, the protection suppresses any operation with a protected document, except viewing, disabling its editing and saving under different names. The content becomes inaccessible via Acrobat API, which prevents file modification via plug-ins. To access the protected contents an end user to use a licensed disc CD-ROM or DVD-ROM and enter the 24-digit key. The Protection Plug-In, which initiates the StarForce protection module, is automatically installed in a selected viewer-application at the first accesswhen the end-user accesses the disc for the fist time.

VIA to rename P4T series?

Our colleagues from Singapore OCWorkBench have reported some interestring news about future VIA chipsets.

According to them, VIA decided to rename its Pentium 4 line, so, instead of PT400 or PT600 we would see:

  • PT800 — Single-channel DDR400, 800MHz FSB support
  • PT880 – Dual-channel DDR400, 800MHz FSB support
  • PT890 — DDR II support, 800MHz FSB support

Of course, this information has to be officially confirmed yet.

HWZ review: Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP 180GB (7200RPM)

"Overall, the new Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP is quite an above average performer especially for a drive that employs the 60GB per platter technology. At 7200RPM and a generous buffer memory of 8MB, the Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP would probably make a good investment if you´re looking for a drive that gives you good overall performance."

Plextor announces two new optical drives

Plextor announced two new optical devices: PX-54TA CD-ROM and PX-116A DVD-ROM.

Internal PX-54TA CD-ROM supports up to 54x read; internal PX-116A DVD-ROM – up to 16x DVD read and up to 48x CD read. Both devices have speeds limited to 40x for better media protection. For maximum performance users are provided with SpeedRead utility.

Having black or white front panels, both drives feature standard E-IDE (ATAPI) interfaces. Retail packages will include Plextor CD/DVD (PlexTools), PowerDVD. PX-54TA will arrive for sale in April, its MSRP is 25 euro (w/o VAT). PX-116A will be available in May for about 49 euro (w/o VAT).

VIA EPIA Mini-ITX M-E6000 Silent Motherboard @ Techseekers.net

"Clearly the new M-Series has been designed with a purpose in mind. Its small, 17cm x 17cm in fact.It uses the VIA Apollo CLE266 chipset which features an embedded MPEG-2 decoder designed to help in creating smooth DVD playback. Although this chipset has integrated 2D/3D graphics it is not designed for games. The chipset also supports DDR266 SDRAM and, ATA/133, USB2 and Firewire. On the audio side of things we have support for (6 Channel Audio) 5.1surround sound, courtesy of the onboard VIA VT1616 6 Channel AC´97 codec. The M-Series has addressed many of the issues that have cropped up in this quest for the Home Theatre PC. As you can see VIA have moved away from letting the CPU handle every part of the multimedia operation. The have combined the virtues of each component to bring the needed multimedia features in to the home in and economical and quiet fashion."

OCZ Technology PC3500 Enhanced Latency memory review @ Tweaknews.net

"While running the DDR400 gauntlet, I have to say that it has been a chore finding the appropriate ram that will run at DDR400 and run without problems. To test this further, I requested a sample of DDR433 PC3500 Enhanced Latency memory from OCZ Technologies to test whether indeed my problems were due to the limitations of the P4X400 chipset I was testing on, or whether the memory was the cause of my performance problems. Did OCZ´s representative sample of DDR433 fix my problems? Well my friend, read on..."
