HP ProLiant DL740 and DL760: new RAID-memory servers arrive

HP announced two 8-processor servers: ProLiant DL740 and ProLiant DL760 based on the new F8 chipset and supporting memory hot swap. ProLiant DL760 is claimed to provide over 115025 transactions per second.

RAID-memory technology (Redundant Array of Industry-standard DIMMs) allows to utilize usual DIMM modules replacing them on-the-fly in case of failures.

Eight-processor ProLiant DL740 and ProLiant DL760 servers feature 2GHz Intel Xeons and differ by the form-factor (4U and 7U) and maximum disk space.

The minimal price of ProLiant DL740 is $24999, of ProLiant DL760 — $27999.

Motorola A760: first photos

3GSM event in Cannes, France, brought us the first photos of Motorola´s new Linux-based mobile handset — A760 – along with company’s comments.

The company confirmed that Motorola A760 will mark the turn of the development strategy to the Linux platform. Until recently Motorola didn´t use Symbian OS preferring proprietary Wisdom system. But now the company will focus on Linux phones, if they are in high demand.

GPUs: expected next year

Our colleagues from PC Watch had time to create this interesting GPU roadmap touching 2004. Featuring integrated solutions, it also includes such myths, as S3 Columbia or Trident XP8.

Another table for the mobile GPU market.

Chaintech Evolution Event Coverage from MonkeyReview

"For now, I´d like to offer you the reasoning behind MonkeyReview attending CEE2003. We were there to cover the Zenith 8VJS, which was scheduled to release along side the AMD Athlon 64, which incidentally has seen its release pushed down to September. What has this inflicted to not only Chaintech but I´m sure a number of other board manufacturers? Well simply put, they´ve had the rug pulled out from under them."

HardwareZone VapoChills new Barton

"Overclock the Barton with a conventional copper cooler? Nah... we´ll go for the best with the VapoChill. Find out just how much more we´re able to overclock the processor and how it compares with the Pentium 4.

In this review, we will explore the possibility of overclocking the Barton core using a VapoChill CPU cooling system. The next few pages, you´ll find benchmarking results of the Barton core at very high clock speeds.

With this type of extreme cooling, does it have what it takes to speed past the competition? Read on to find out."

Micron presents two CMOS sensors with VGA resolution

Today, at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, Micron Technology announced sample shipments of new low-power MI-0343 CMOS sensors supporting VGA resolution along with MI-SOC-0343 chips with integrated CMOS VGA matrices.

1/4" MI-0343 CMOS sensors and MI-SOC-0343 integrated chips supports 640x480 (VGA) resolution, and feature 5.6µm pixel pitch, 3.584x2.668mm image size and require 40mW (MI-0343) or up to 85mW (integrated ones) at 15fps recording. Designed for new mobile handsets, both can be programmed for QVGA, QQVGA, CIF and QCIF operation with progressive scanning and up to 30fps frame rate. The integrated chip combining a CMOS sensor and an Image Flow Processor (IFP) can be programmed fot 8-bit CCIR 656 (YCrCb) or 565-RGB output and allows to adjust chroma level, contrast, color correction, clearness, automatic scan swap (50/60Hz), etc.

Bjorn3D.com reviews EPoX 8RDA+ motherboard on nForce2

"Our review item is EPoX´s nForce2 variant, the 8RDA+. We decided to focus the review on a direct comparison between the performance of a nForce to the nForce2. In other words, I´m doing a simple swap of the motherboards and we´ll see what happens. :)"

SiS releases VIVO-enabled Xabre600

Today Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) announced a new version of Xabre600 GPU featuring Conexant Systems’ Bt835 multimedia chip and thus supporting VIVO.

Now Xabre600 is a complete integrated solution supporting analog video encoding and NTSC/PAL/SECAM input. The GPU supports CRT, DVI interfaces and S-video, composite inputs. SiS Xabre600 clock speed is still 300MHz, and it still supports 300MHz memory and AGP 8X.

Sharp announces high-contrast 19" LCD monitor

Sharp announced a new 19" LL-T19D1-H with 700:1 contrast.

It features 19" 1280x1024 (SXGA) panel with 240cd/m² brightness, 0.294mm pixel pitch, 170° veritical and horizontal viewing angle, 56Hz-76.2Hz (analog) or 60Hz-75Hz (digital) frame scan, 24.8kHz to 81.1kHz (analog) or 31.5kHz–67.5kHz (digital) line scan.

The monitor allows to provides 5 color temperature modes, a low-power "office" mode with up to 25W energy consumption. The model has two analog and one digital connector. Its nominal power is about 43W and 1.9W in standby. The dimensions are 423x222x392mm, weight – 6.9kg, price expected in Japan – less than $800.

Japanese companies to release EUV plants in 2005

According to provisional data announced at the sixth International Forum on Semiconductor Technology (IFST), Japanese Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography System Development Association (EUVA) plans to launch the development of the first EUV plant this year. A working prototype is expected in 2005.

Besides EUVA, there’s another organization in Japan — Association of Super-Advanced Electronics Technologies (ASET) – that develops EUV plant as well. However it seems that EUVA created in 2001 will become a leader in this development.

It’s also interesting that EUVA includes Canon and Nikon that are real rivals. But they will jointly develop optical systems for the EUV plant sample. Nevertheless both rivals plan to advance their own EUV products to the market.

Prolink releases PixelView GeForce FX 5800 Ultra

Prolink announced its own variant of NVIDIA GeForce FX-based graphics card.

GPU/memory clock rate of 128Mb PixelView GeForce FX 5800 Ultra make 500MHz/1GHz (DDR). The board supports VIVO, analog and DVI-I connectors. As we can see, the design is rather close to the reference one.

AOpen AX4GE FM in our lab

We are currently testing a new AOpen AX4GE FM ATX motherboard on i845GE + ICH4 bundle in our lab.

Its specs are similar to other i845GE-based solutions: Socket 478 Pentium 4 with up to 53MHz FSB, 3 DIMM sockets (up to 2Gb PC2700), integrated graphics, AGP 4x slot, 6 PCI slots, CNR slot, 10/100Mbps LAN (Realtek), 5.1-ch. AC97 codec (Realtek), 6 USB2.0 ports, etc. As you can guess, the board is also bundled with an FM tuner on a daughterboard.

AOpen AX4GE FM retail pack is filled with various utils and other software.
