Western Digital WD Raptor: new 10,000rpm Serial ATA hard drive

Today Western Digital officially announced new 10,000rpm WD Raptor hard drive family, being the market-first to support Enterprise Serial ATA (ESATA).

New WD Raptors feature large MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of about 1.2 million hours, 5.2ms average read seek, up to 150Mb/s buffer to host transfer rate and the 5-year warranty.

Shipments of WD Raptor drives are expected in the late February. The initial capacity (WD360GD model) will make 36.7Gb.

Leadtek K7NCR18G Pro: a new revision

You are already familiar with Leadtek´s K7NCR18G Pro motherboards on NVIDIA nForce2. According to our colleagues from GZeasy, in the nearest future the company is to ship a new revision of this mobo improved to meet all the modern requirements.



As you also know, Serial ATA hard drives are to arrive in quantities in the nearest future. Due to this Leadtek decided to add a Silicon Image SATA controller to the newer K7NCR18G Pro. Besides, the board supports CPU multiplier setting.

K7NCR18G Pro brief specifications: nForce2 IGP128 (integrated GF4MX graphics) + nForce2 MCP-T chipset, ATX, AGP8X, up to 3Gb DDR400, 10/100 LAN, AC97, USB2.0, ATA133, SoundStorm Dolby Digital, IEEE1394.

MSI releases 845GVM (MS-6714) on i845GV chipset

MSI announced new 845GVM (MS-6714) motherboard on Intel 845GV chipset. There will be two versions available: a standard 845GVM and 845GVM-L with 10/100 LAN interface.


The novelty features ATX design, supports Socket 478 Intel Pentium 4/Celeron (1.4GHz to 3.06GHz; 400/533MHz to 100/133MHz FSB), has 2 DIMM sockets (up to 2Gb PC2100; w/o ECC), 3 PCI slots, CNR slot, integrated AC97 2.2 codec (Realtek ALC650), 6 USB 2.0/1.1 ports. The LAN version also features RealTek RTL8101L chip.

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ on the Barton core officially announced

Today AMD officially announced Athlon XP 3000+ processors on the Barton core.

New CPUs feature redesigned Thoroughbred core with doubled L2 cache (512Kb). They are made using 0.13-micron technology at Fab30 in Dresden.

Introducing Athlon XP 3000+ (Barton) specifications:

  • L2 cache: 512Kb

  • Crystal size: 101mm²
  • Transistor count: about 54.3 million
  • Core voltage: 1.65V
  • Max. crystal temperature: 85°C
  • Typ. energy consumption: 58.4W
  • Max. energy consumption: 74.3W
  • Icc (typical; low power): 7.2A
  • Icc (typical, normal power): 35.4A
  • Icc (maximum): 45.0A

The detailed processor review is being prepared now. The MSRP of Athlon XP 3000+ (Barton) in over 1,000-unit quantities is $588. NEC-CI has already announced systems on the new AMD Athlon XP 3000+ for the European market, and similar releases are expected to arrive from a number of companies as well.

Besides, today we expected another Barton-based CPU — Athlon XP 2800+ — to be released with the wholesale price of $375 (according to provisional information). However, it’s not mentioned in the official press release as well as on the company website. Future Athlon XP 3200+ is expected closer to mid-year.
