Taiwanese first-tier makers announce October results

On the wave of seasonal demand growth mobo market leaders, including Asustek Computer, Gigabyte Technology, Micro-Star International (MSI), reported the significant growth of October sales and shipments that exceeded forecasted values. Elitegroup Computer hasn´t yet published October results, but provisional information indicates it’s not as successful, as rivals mainly due to delays in notebook component shipments to OEM partners.

Among companies, that have already published October results, I can outline Asustek, achieved considerable growth of sales and shipments, including graphics cards and notebooks.

Gigabyte published October results, though haven’t provided sufficient details. Analysts believe that in October the company sold about 1.4 million mobos and about 130-140,000 graphics cards.

National Semiconductor and ARM work to prolong handset operation time

According to Reuters, National Semiconductor and ARM Holdings Plc announced the joint development of handset operation time prolongation up to five times of the current level.

According to Ravi Ambatipudi, senior manager of mobile power supply department, National Semiconductor, initially PowerWise technology is called to provide 6-9 hours of talking. Dimensions and pricing issues are also being considered.

National Semiconductor´s PowerWise supplied with ARM´s Intelligent Energy Manager software will be available for testing in Q2 2003. First mainstream solutions are expected in mid-2004.

New AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2200+

Today AMD officially announced a new mobile processor — AMD Athlon XP 2200+. Like all the previous models. It supports AMD PowerNow!, AMD 3DNow! Professional. Processors will be produced at Fab 30 in Dresden using 0.13-micron copper process technology.

New mobile AMD Athlon XP 2200+ will be shipped for reasonable $186 in over 1,000-unit quantities. It’s interesting that the price list at the company website still doesn´t contain any data about the novelty, and the price is provided in the press release only. Price list information enables to think that lower-end lines will be price-cut soon, as the prices for Mobile AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 1900+, 1800+ are still $345, $239á $196, respectively).

Several companies have already announced notebooks on this processor. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will ship AMILO A-x600 series for the European market. Epson Direct will sell its notebooks in Japan, Time Computers´ models will appear in UK later this month. HSN will ship models on the new processor to USA.
