Sun Microsystems quarter financial results

Sun Microsystems announced results for the first financial quarter of 2003, that ended on September 29, 2002.

Sales volumes made $2.7 billion, 4% lower than $2.9 billion of the previous quarter. The dead loss (GAAP) made $111 million, or $0.04 per stock, that´s lower than $180 million or $0.06 per stock year ago. Excluding $31 million for stocks purchase, $24 million restructuring expenses, and $22 million taxes, the loss made $78 million, or $0.02 per stock.

Next year Sun plans to continue restructuring and cut staff by 11%, resulting about $300 million additional expenses. R&D investment cut is not planned.

JEDEX Beijing to bring DDR-II server platform from Micron

Micron Technology is to announce DDR-II server platform prototype at JEDEX Beijing in Peking.

It is made using proprietary memory controllers and features special analysis software. Micron will also announce other prototypes supporting DDR-II, DDR400, and DDR333. I hope more info to follow from the Peking conference.

IC Insights: bright semiconductor industry forecasts for 2003 grow dim

Analysing semiconductor market, IC Insights Inc. Decreased values of semiconductor industry forecast for 2002 from 4% to 1% growth; at the same time, pre-forecasted growth for 2003 was reduced from 24% to 15%.

According to IC Insights´ data, chip market(except for discrete) will make $119.8 billion in 2002, that´s not much higher than $118.5 billion of 2001. Analysts believe the main reason of industry growth forecast reduction to be international gross revenues forecast decrease. IC Insights thinks that in 2002 electronic sales volumes will grow just 6% over 2001 volumes; 2003 growth will make just 5%.

Regional market activity is interesting as well. In 2002 American, European and Japanese semiconductor markets will decrease by 12%, 10%, 8%, respectively. Remaining markets will grow by 29%.

IBM PowerPC 405EP: new low-power comm processor

IBM announced new low-power PowerPC processor for embedded appliances, including WLAN access points, DSL routers, cable modems, etc.

PowerPC 405EP bases on IBM PowerPC 405 core and features 133, 200, 266 MHz clocks. At that 200 MHz model requries 1W. IBM PowerPC 405EP also includes dual-port 10/100 Ethernet, enabling 802.11a/b access point developers to cut cost prices.

The chip also includes PCI, SDRAM controller, 64-bit CoreConnect bus and support various peripherals.

PowerPC 405EP is made at IBM facilities using 0.18-micron copper SA-27e process. 133, 200, 266 MHz samples will be announced this month. 133 MHz PowerPC 405EP will cost $17 in over 10,000-unit quantities. Volume production is scheduled to November.

NEC adds to VersaPro and VersaPro R series

This week NEC is to ship (in Japan) new VersaPro and VersaPro R notebooks.

VersaPro VA20S/RF features 2 GHz Mobile Pentium 4-M (integrated RADEON IGP 340M), 15-inch 1024x768 LCD, 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 24x CD-ROM. Depending on OS (Windows 2000, XP Home Edition, XP Professional) the price varies in $1900 — $2000 range.

Other VersaPro models: VA11J/RF, VA11J/RX, VA12H/RF, etc., differ mainly by CPUs — Mobile Pentium III or Mobile Celeron.

VA20S/AE is the most interesting in VersaPro series, featuring 15-inch LCD with very high 2048x1536 (QXGA) resolution, 2.2 GHz Mobile Pentium 4-M, 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 24x CD-ROM, and floppy. The novelty will cost about $3700. Other models, including all-in-one VA13J/DG on 1.33 GHz Mobile Pentium III ($2900), etc., have more humble features.
