VTF2002: VIA announces Hi-Fi PC Concept Design

Today at VIA Technology Forum 2002, VIA Technologies announced Hi-Fi PC Concept Design, combining features of a universal CD/DVD/VCD audio/video player and standard compact PC functionality.


The design is embodied in a compact 190x190x340mm aluminium case.


PC bases on VIA C3 / EDEN EBGA processor and new 4-layer Mini-ITX VIA EPIA M mobo on Apollo CLE266 + VT8235 bundle, featuring 6-channel audio (VT1616), 10/100 Base-T Ethernet (VT6103), USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 (VT6307S) ports, TV-out (VT1622).

The production will supposedly be launched by VIA partners in Q1 2003.

Matsushita continues Let´snote series

Today Matsushita Electric announced new CF-T1RDAXR, CF-T1RCAXR, and CF-T1RWAXR notebooks of Let´snote LIGHT T1 line, and CF-R1NCAXR of Let´snote LIGHT R1 line. Both lines feature magnesium alloy body with additional HDD vibration protection. Besides, T1 line has the feature of maximum standalone operation with the internal battery.


Let´snote LIGHT T1 models feature 12.1-inch 1024x768 panel, 866 MHz ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) Mobile Pentium III-M. Notebooks weigh 999 g; built-in battery provide 5-hour operation.

CF-T1RDAXR features 128MB SDRAM, 20GB ahrd disk (Ultra ATA/100). CF-T1RCAXR has 256MB SDRAM, 40GB hard disk (Ultra ATA/100). CF-T1RWAXR and CF-T1RCAXR also feature WLAN (IEEE 802.11b) modules.


CF-R1NCAXR of R1 line features 10.4-inch 1024x768 LCD and weighs just 960 g. It has same CPU, 128MB SDRAM (up to 384MB), 20GB hard disk (Ultra ATA/100). R1 models can be used with special body covers for better experience.


All notebooks have Windows XP Professional. Pricing is yet unknown.

Plextor announces new 48È CD-R blanks

Plextor Europe announced a new line of CD-R media.

New CD-R blanks, supporting 48x recording, will feature 80 min (700MB) capacity. Retail shipments are planned to mid-November 2002.

Blanks will be shipped in two package types: 50-unit spindle, and 10-unit box.


Hewlett-Packard to sell notebooks for $899?

Early next week Hewlett-Packard is expected to announce new Compaq Evo N1015v series on mobile Athlon for $899 and higher. They will be mainly aimed at small businesses, students, and jobholders.

Compaq Evo N1015v basic configuration will feature Athlon XP 1400+, 13.3-inch LCD, 20GB HDD, 128MB RAM. Such a notebook will cost just $899. For $999 the same N1015v will be supplied with a Wi-Fi module, connected to Multiport. Naturally, the line will include more powerful models for respective prices.

TEAC announces three new optical drives

TEAC Europe announced two new ATAPI/IDE CD-RW drives: CD-W548E and CD-W552E, and new DV-516E DVD-ROM.

CD-W548E supports 48/16/48x speeds, CD-W552E — 52/24/52x speeds. Both support Mount Rainier, feature 2MB buffer, about 100ms read access time. They are supplied with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/NT, Netware, SOC, UNIX and LINUX drivers, cables, CD-R and CD-RW blanks, and recorder software (Windows only). The suggested price of TEAC CD-W548E makes 99 euro, the price of 52x model is not yet announced.

TEAC DV-516E DVD-ROM reads DVDs at 16x, CDs — at 48x. DV-516E supports almost all DVD formats, including double-layered (up to 17GB/disc), MPEG2, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DVD-R. The drive has 512KB buffer, IDE interface, supports PIO 4 / UDMA 33, features about 85ms DVD and CD-ROM read access time. The suggested price of TEAC DV-516E is 59 euro.

JVC announces palm-sized InterLink notebooks

Late in November JVC is to present three A5 InterLink models, based on ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) 866 MHz Mobile Pentium III-M and SiS630ST with integrated graphics.


MP-XP7220 (on the right) features 8.9-inch 1024x600 (Wide SVGA) LCD, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard disk, built-in stereo speakers, 2 USB 2.0 ports, i.LINK (IEEE1394), 10/100BASE-TX, 56kbps modem (V.90/K56flex), PC Card (Type II) and SD slots.

Notebook also features "double power" system: internal battery provides 1.4 hours of operation, external — additional 4 hours. Max. energy consumption makes 46W. Notebook dimensions are 225x152x29.5 mm, weight — 895 g (1065 g with a battery). MP-XP7220 with Windows XP Professional (SP1) will cost about $1750.

MP-XP7220EX (on the left) differs from MP-XP7220 by a WLAN adapter and the price — about $1830.

MP-XP5220 differs from MP-XP7220 by 128MB RAM, 20GB, Windows XP Home Edition (SP1). At that internal battery provides 1.5 hours of operation, external — 4.5 hours. The approximate price of MP-XP5220 is about $1500.


Additional accessories include MP-WLX1 WLAN (PC card) for about $100 (on the left), 16x MP-CDX1 CD-ROM (about $250), MP-WDX1 DVD/CD-RW (on the right; about $300), batteries, cases, etc.

CRW-5224A: 52x CD-RW from ASUS

ASUS announced new ASUS CRW-5224A CD-RW drive featuring 52/24/52x speeds and CAV (constant angular velocity) support.

Drive specifications:

IWILL announces P4HT family on i845PE

IWILL announced enw P4HT line, based on Intel 845PE. New boards support Pentium 4 with 533MHz FSB, Hyper-Threading, DDR333.

Maxtor announces new external hard drives

Today Maxtor announced a new family of Personal Storage 5000 external hard drives. They have Maxtor OneTouch feature that allows to copy all the contents to a desktop or notebook HDD by a single click.


Maxtor Personal Storage 5000 family includes 5000XT, 5000DV, and 5000LE hard drives.

5400 RPM 250GB Personal Storage 5000XT features FireWire (IEEE 1394) and USB 2.0 and will cost about $400.


7200 RPM 120GB Personal Storage 5000DV also supports FireWire (IEEE 1394) and USB 2.0 and will cost about $300.

5400 RPM 80GB Personal Storage 5000LE supports USB 2.0 and will cost about $200.

Besides, those who do not have IEEE 1394 ports, Maxtor offers 1394 PCI Adapter Card, 1394 CardBus, or Maxtor DV Producer (including an IEEE 1394 card) for $49.95, $99.95, or $79.95, respectively.

SX56: new GSM 900/1900 communicator from Siemens

Today Siemens announced new SX56 GSM 900/1900 communicator for AT&T Wireless subscribers.


SX56 combines a mobile phone, organizer, MP3 player, supports Microsoft Office and GPRS.
