AMD: Hammer and Barton delayed again

Early today numerous Web editions, including Reuters, DowJones, Wall Street Journal, reported that AMD has again decided to move desktop Hammer release dates and delay Barton-based Athlon processors.

So, volume production of desktop Hammer CPUs is moved to late Q1 2003. These chips and systems will appear for sale late in Q1 / early Q2 2003. As you know, AMD has planned to announce them late in Q4 2002. Server Opteron shipments are still scheduled for H1 2003.

The release of new Barton-based Athlon processor with 512KB L2 cache is delayed as well. The announcement is moved from H2 2002 to Q1 2003. Analysts believe the reason to be the release of new 333 MHz FSB Athlon processors. And the situation with Hammers is, perhaps, even simpler: most likely, they are just not ready.

By the way, AMD posted an updated processor roadmap, dated to September 12, i.e. the latest for now.

Information about Hammers is indeed true, as they´ve disappeared from 2002 part. Strange that Bartons are still in the H2 2002 part. Will it be a paper announcement? The time wil tell, October 7 is almost at hand...

2.6 and 2.8 GHz Intel Xeons and new Dell workstations

During IDF Intel officially announced two new 2.6 and 2.8 GHz Xeon processors with 512KB L2 cache, designed for servers and workstations. Chips are made using 0.13-micron process technology.

The company recommends i860, supporting Rambus DRAM, dual-processor configurations, and AGP4x, as a chipset for Xeon workstation motherboards. Dual-processor Xeon servers can be based on Intel E7500 chipset.

New Xeon wholesale price (over 1,000-unit consignments) is $562 for 2.8 GHz chip and $433 for 2.6 GHz chip.

Yesterday we introduced a dual-CPU x4000 from Hewlett-Packard, based on 2.8 GHz Intel Xeons. Today Dell announced its workstations on 2.80/2.60 GHz Xeons.

Dell Precision Workstation 530 on 2.8 GHz Xeon bases on i860, has 1GB PC800 RDRAM, 80GB UltraATA/100 hard disk, 128MB NVIDIA Quadro4 900XGL, 48╚ CD-ROM, Windows 2000 Professional, and costs about $3300. A version on 2.6 GHz Xeon with 512MB PC800 RDRAM, 40GB UltraATA/100 hard disk, 32MB NVIDIA Quadro2 EX, and Windows 2000 Professional will cost about $2300.

Intel to cut prices again in December

After Intel announces its new DDR333 chipsets on October 7: 845GE and 845PE and also 845GV DDR266 chipset, it´s not going to release any Pentium 4 chipsets until Q2 2003. after that Intel will have to apply aggressive pricing to keep up and extend the market presence.

According to Taiwanese press, for December 29 Intel scheduled a massive price cut for all its chipsets. However, mobo makers do not plan any significant price cuts in the near future, as first, discounts won´t be massive, that´s clearly seen from the table, second discounts will be effective only after the New Year.
