Sony concepts: future VAIOs

Among numerous exhibitions and conferences of this week there´s Sony Dream World 2002 started yesterday in Yokohama. VAIO EXPO 2002 resembles an "exhibition in exhibition", featuring such concepts besides computer, peripheral, musical and gaming products.

Sony goes still farther from usual PC forms. This thing is called VAIO NOTE Personal Library or VAIO Contents Egg, but the name won´t let you understand the meaning. It´s nothing more than a home server for photos, videos, music, etc., supporting external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Inserting disc into a built-in DVD-RW launches the playback. Loading external data the body turns blue.

VAIO Contents Egg is designed for storing photos, favourite TV shows, music. It can be saved to a built-in hard disk or to a DVD disc. Naturally, the egg supports wireless Internet connectivity, enabling more content. And, of course, VAIO Contents Egg supports notebook connectivity.

This tambourine is another home server called Sensing Computer or VAIO E. Q. Provided with wireless connectivity it´s controlled by a sensor panel or voice. According to the company these or similar things might be commercialized by 2004.

Hewlett-Packard x4000: dual-processor workstation on 2.8 GHz Intel Xeons

Early in October Hewlett-Packard plans to ship high-end x4000 Windows workstation, based on two 2.8 GHz Xeon processors.

HP Workstation X4000 X/2800 36G/512/RW/WXP (A9380A#ABJ) bases on two 2.8 GHz Xeons, i860 chipset, has 512MB ECC RDRAM (up to 4GB), 36GB Ultra160 SCSI hard disk (up to 292GB), 40/10/40x CD-RW and Windows XP Professional.

System dimensions are 210x470x490 mm, weight — 16 kg.

It´s interesting that the new graphics workstation will be shipped without a graphics card and customers will have to choose it from: ATI RADEON Fire GL8800, NVIDIA Quadro2 EX, Quadro4 900XGL or 3Dlabs WildcatIII 6110. Basic HP Workstation x4000 (w/o graphics will cost about $4700.

DiMAGE 7Hi: updated 5-megapixel camera Minolta

Minolta announced the new version of DiMAGE 7 — DiMAGE 7Hi. First, late in September a limited amount (3,000 units) will appear in Japanese retail for about $1550, that´s about $200 more than Japanese price for DiMAGE 7i.

What does it differ from DiMAGE 7i by? DiMAGE 7Hi features 64MB SRAM, enabling serial 3 fps shooting at 2560x1920 and also to store up to 10 2560x1920 RAW images.

Other specs are rather similar to DiMAGE 7i: 2/3-inch 5-megapixel (effective) CCD, 7È optical lens (28-200 mm equiv., F2.8-F3.5); 2È digital zoom, 2560x1920 / 1600x1200 / 1280x960 / 640x480 image resolution.

The camera features 220,000 LCD screen and supports CF and Microdrive.

DiMAGE 7Hi dimensions: 117x112.5x90.5mm, weight — 530 g.

IDF: Itanium 2 servers from RackSaver

RackSaver RS-4460, based on Intel Server Platform SR870BN4 and Itanium 2 900 MHz and 1 GHz, is currently showcased at Intel Developer Forum in San Jose. Volume shipments are expected in the fourth quarter.

Cypress announces 12 Mbit SRAM

Cypress Semiconductor yesterday announced new 12 Mbit SRAM chip.

CY7C1012AV is made using 0.15-micron process technology in 119-pin BGA package. Read/write time makes up to 8ns.

Samples are already being shipped, volume shipments are expected in November for $40 per unit in over 1,000 consignments.

Photo of the day: 3D Prophet 9700 Pro from Hercules

We´ve got a new 3D Prophet 9700 Pro graphics card from Hercules, featuring a copper cooler, in our videolab.

I guess no need to introduce this novelty, mentioned in many news, so, before the article appears, have a look at the photos.

P.S. Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro is also interesting as its retail package includes new popular Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind game.
