DDR2-667 support to be an apanage of third parties?
One of the most interesting moments of VIA´s technological forum at Computex 2004 was the DDR2-667 module demonstration by all major brands, in particular, Samsung and Elpida. According to forum visitors, the most popular was the showcase of a VIA PT890 system with such memory modules.
It seems that boards on "native" Intel i925X, i915G/P won´t be suitable for DDR2-667, as they officially support DDR2-533 only. But third parties (SiS and VIA will for sure) might find this memory kind interesting. You should remember that VIA promised DDR2-667 in its PT890 as far back as in March at CeBIT.
Showcased DDR2-667 modules had 5-5-5 timings, not far from 4-4-4 timings of DDR2-533. But adoption of this memory is still questionable, as JEDEC hasn´t yet cleared out the specs. Well, it doesn´t seem that critical, as close cooperation of memory and chipset vendors along with their support is enough for memory distribution. The time will tell us whether 1.85V Hyper DIMM is going to be popular or not.
