ATI Radeon 9800XT and Radeon 9600XT: manufacture process details
An addition to the announcement of ATI Technologies Radeon 9800XT and Radeon 9600XT. We got to know some technical details about the manufacture process interesting enough to be posted in the news.
As you know, both models are made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). From the angle of process advancement 0.13µm 500MHz Radeon 9600XT is better. Now the 0.13µm TSMC process includes new Black Diamond low-k dielectric from Applied Materials Inc. It´s interesting that ATI currently doesn´t provide any information about using it for the next-generation ATI R400 to be released in the Spring 2004. Still they are satisfied with quality it provides.
Unlike Radeon 9600XT, the top-end Radeon 9800XT is made using older 0.15µm TSMC process. The clock speed increase to 412MHz (about 15% over Radeon 9800 Pro) was achieved by metallic layers circuitry optimizations as well as memory controller optimizations, newer PCB and cooling system design.
