Monthly drivers report and popular 3D
accelerators comparison
Monthly 3D Digest is the project of iXBT.com devoted to releases of new Windows XP (monthly) and Windows 9x/ME (once in 4 months) drivers for popular videocards (released from the 10th of January 2003 to the 10th 10th of February 2004). As usual, there are many diagrams containing the information on changes in operation of videocards at change to last version drivers, and also summary diagrams of popular modern videocards performance. Traditionally we provide the best price/performance information for our 3Digest. Quality aspects are reviewed in the section dedicated to Windows XP.
February 2004
One of the major events was the Game Developers Conference (KRI2004)
held on February 21-22 (it's described here).
It hosted a lot of seminars held by ATI and NVIDIA and also offered
us a chance to speak to two worldwide popular game developers, John
Romero and Tom Hall. This clearly proved the importance and the necessity
of conducting such events in the future.
The last winter month continued generating tension in the graphics card market. Almost every day we were hearing to some "semi-official" information about the NV40 and R420. Moreover, NVIDIA quietly added a number of newer names to its roadmap, in particular, GeForce FX 5700LE, GeForce FX 5700VE, GeForce FX 5500, and... GeForce FX 5200SE! I'm afraid buyers' mental health might shatter in the vast ocean of GeForces, when these novelties reach the retail...
But let's continue with the Digest. In this issue you will see a considerably changed list of tested graphics cards, including the long-anticipated XGI Volari Duo V8 Ultra. As well as the lots of tests and even more charts! :-))
Stay with us, and you will always know about every product in the consumer graphics card market!
It's our 45th issue of 3Digest.

2. Videocard list
Below is the list of graphics cards that we tested. Each corresponding page contains the brief card description. Besides, some pages are dedicated to the latest drivers for cards on given GPUs. In the summary diagrams you can also see the performance results obtained on overclocked graphics cards.
Drivers released by videocard manufacturers are not taken into account (unless written by GPU manufacturers) because there are very many of them and it's impossible to test them all.
You can find comments about reviewed drivers in the corresponding sections:
3D graphics quality screenshots are provided in our monthly updated Screenshot Gallery.

3. February 2004 news and current business
- 3.1. The following drivers were released from January 10, 2004 to February 10, 2004:
- NVIDIA ForceWare for all NVIDIA cards:
- ATI Catalyst for all ATI cards:
- Windows XP: 6.414, 6.422;
These and other drivers are available for download at drivers.ixbt.com, riva.ixbt.com, as well as on unofficial support websites: NVWORLD and RADEON2.RU. We've excluded 3DMark from our testing, however as many like these tests, we recommend you to visit Guide3D.ru that contains a lot of useful information.
- 3.2. In this month we used 53.03 drivers for NVIDIA cards summaries; 6.422 drivers for ATI cards summaries.
- 3.3. This time we added Far Cry DEMO (Crytek/UbiSoft) benchmark to our standard test list.
DirectX 9.0, multitexturing, demos are here (to run with -DEVMODE), Very High settings (except for textures, which DEMO prevents to set above Medium).
4. Summary diagrams of graphics cards performance with the latest drivers available at the moment of testing in February 2004.
- 4.1. Call of Duty
- 4.2. FarCry Demo
- 4.3. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
- 4.4. Aquamark 3
- 4.5. Unreal 2: The Awakening
- 4.6. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness
- 4.7. RightMark 3D
- 4.8. Half Life 2 beta
- 4.10. Archive (information from the previous 3Digests absent in this issue)
- 4.9. Notes on videocards' performance with the latest drivers:
- If a chart doesn't contain results for a certain card or have them all at 0 level, it means that either the given benchmark didn't run or run incorrectly on this card.
- Cards without DirectX9 support work incorrectly in FarCry Demo. Besides, antialiasing also doesn't work right in this app. Therefore we used this bench only in the "pure performance" mode.
- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ system occasionally indicates peculiar results, so we sorted cards in charts by their performance in the Pentium4-based testbed.
- Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell didn't run on Radeon 9200SE 64MB 64bit, so charts don't have results for it.
- RADEON 9200 showed periodical performance drop to nearly 0 level in Half Life 2 beta.
If you stumble upon any peculiarities of ATI card or drivers operation, visit RADEON2.RU that sheds light on such situations and offers some help.
- Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness and Aquamark 3 don't work with GeForce4 with forced AA.
Summing up the information on NVIDIA family I recommend you to visit NVIDIA World website that often provides solutions to your problems caused by drivers bugs, etc. and offers all necessary drivers along with the RivaTuner.
- XGI Volari works incorrectly in FarCry Demo providing a usual black screen. Besides, in Call of Duty drivers continued to use VSync, even when it was forced off.
Summary diagrams were compiled using results of all testbeds. Quality issues and drivers differences were examined with the Intel Pentium 4 3200 MHz testbed.
I guess no more comments needed, readers will easily understand what is what themselves. :)
5. 3D accelerator ratings calculations for the end of the month
Anyone who wants to conduct his own rating calculations with his own values may download this Excel table (Office'3-'0) in RAR 3.0 and ZIP format.
The method of rating calculation is described here.
Calculations were conducted considering the following assumptions:
- Windows XP is used;
- Percentage of performance and quality demand ratio:
- Performance priority - 60%
- Quality priority - 40%
- ONLY 1600x1200@32bpp resolution was used for the prospect rating;
- Usability ratings are separated into the three sections: High-End, Middle-End, and Low-End. Each rating features its own expenses for system upgrade. All this is considered in APG parameter that is 100 for Low-End, 250 for Middle-End, and 151 for High-End. We believe that if a user wants to purchase a very expensive and powerful accelerator, he understands the inanity of installing it into a Low-End PC. So we separated the usability rating for different PC levels.
Usability rating (rating from the previous 3Digest is in parentheses):
Usability rating: card price + $500
