AMD Promises Kabini APU Launch in First Half of 2013
During yesterday's earnings call, AMD revealed it has taped out numerous of its 2013 products and that there are many working chips from the 2013 product lineup at the company's labs. Unfortunately, the chip designer didn't reveal anything about new high-performance processors, but it did announce that the Kabini SoC APU, which will replace the Brazos 2.0 low-power platform, is slated for the first half of 2013.
"We already have working silicon for many of our new 2013 products in house, including our next-generation 28nm Kabini APU, which is the successor to our highly successful Brazos platform and our first true SoC design. We are making good progress with the bring up of Kabini, which remains on track to launch in the first half of next year," said Rory Read, chief executive officer of AMD, during a conference call with financial analysts.
The Kabini APU is a quad-core chip based on the Jaguar architecture, with a new GPU architecture as well as improvements for heterogeneous processing. The chip will have a new memory controller and will integrate input/output capabilities.

Apple’s Mini iPad to Likely Start at a Minimum of $329 in the U.S.
Apple’s entry price for its upcoming smaller iPad is between the base model of the new, fifth-generation iPod touch ($299) and the currently shipping WiFi-only 16GB iPad 2 ($399). According to 9to5mac, the base model of the smaller iPad will likely be priced at a minimum of $329 in the United States.
Two higher capacities of the smaller iPad will be available in the WiFi-only configuration. These will likely be priced at $100 premiums over each other at a minimum of $429 and $529.
Apple’s smaller iPad will also come in a version that connects to cellular networks. Like the third-generation iPad, these models will come at a $130 premium over their corresponding storage capacity in the WiFi-only line. This comes out to likely minimum price points of $459, $559, and $659 for the WiFi + Cellular line.
The new iPod touch will continue to be cheaper than Apple’s new tablet, while the smaller iPad’s pricing will also be spaced under and between the new full-sized iPads. However, this key starting price of $329 is considerably higher than the $199 entry level price of Google’s Nexus 7 and $159 price of Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
Apple is currently planning on making the smaller iPad available on Friday, November 2nd. It will be announced at a media event on October 23rd.
