Nintendo Announces Wii U Launch Date, Prices

Nintendo has announced the release date and prices of the Wii U for Japan. There, it will be rolled out on December 8, in two versions.

The budget model will be white and have 8 GB of internal storage and come with a Wii U GamePad tablet controller. The premium model will be black, with 32GB of internal storage and, besides a GamePad, will come with an HDMI cable and a charging cradle for the bundled tablet controller. The prices has been set at ¥26,250 ($338) for the basic edition and ¥31,500 ($406) for the premium edition.

Separately, the Wii U GamePad controller will cost around $170, while the Xbox-like Wii U Pro Controller will be around $65.

Speaking of hardware, the Wii U has 2GB RAM: 1GB is reserved for the OS and 1GB is available for games to use. Games will ship on 25GB discs (can be Blu-ray, although that's not confirmed). Nintendo might be willing lose money on hardware just to get a foothold on the market before Xbox 720 and PS4 arrive.

All existing Wii accessories will be compatible with Wii U, along with the backwards compatibility of the games. Nintendo has also confirmed that New Super Mario Bros. and Nintendoland will be the launch titles for the system.

The UK release date and price for the Wii U are to be announced soon.
