Transcend Releases The Smallest microSD Card

Transcend Information has developed its latest high performance microSD Memory Card, and at only half the size of a mobile phone SIM card it is the smallest memory card in the world.

Transcend’s microSD card can also be used in regular SD memory card slots by combining the card with its provided adapter, thus ensuring that the microSD card can be used in all compliant SD card devices.

Product features:

  • Approx 20% of the size of a standard SD Card, but with all of the features and performance
  • microSD adapter allows the card to be used in standard SD card slots
  • Adoption of original SLC NAND flash chips
  • Compliant with the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) portable device requirements

Sony Ericsson Unveils Its First UMTS Music Phone - The W900

Sony Ericsson today added its first UMTS handset to the Walkman range of music phones bringing the total number of phones in the range to four. The W900 is a fully specified music player, phone and imaging device following the W800 model. (Two previously announced Walkman phones are also about to launch, the W600 in the Americas and W550 in the rest of the world.)

As a music player, the W900 imports, transfers, manages and plays music from operators’ over-the-air (OTA) music download services, allowing tracks to be downloaded directly to the phone while on the move and, from a PC when tracks have been copied from the owner’s CD collection.

The supplied Disc2Phone PC software allows the user to easily transfer music to the phone from audio CDs and a PC music collection. Disc2Phone can transfer music based on playlists and has shuffle functionality. The W900’s internal 470MB user free memory provides space for between 120 and 240 songs. The storage capacity can be increased with Memory Stick PRO Duo cards, currently available in retail outlets at up to 2GB, giving space for up to 1,000 tracks. Music files can be stored in all the key formats: MP3, AAC or AAC+, MIDI, WAV and XMF.

The W900 is the first Sony Ericsson phone to be supplied with a Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-80 with remote control, that allows the user to operate the Walkman player without removing it from their pocket. A USB cable and Disc2Phone PC software for transfer and management of music files are also included in the box.

The W900 UMTS Walkman phone is available in black or white and will be commercially available end Q4 2005. The variants will be: W900i - Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa W900c; Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Mainland China. NEC LCD Technologies Develops 4.1-Inch System-on-Glass LCD Module

NEC LCD Technologies today announced the development of a 4.1-inch (10.4cm diagonal), W-VGA SOG LCD module for mobile devices. Mass production of the newly developed SOG LCD module is targeted at the end of 2006 and will be carried out on the low temperature poly silicon (LTPS) LCD production lines of NEC Akita, Ltd.

According to the company, the new SOG module has been realized by the simultaneous pursuit of a wide color gamut and high luminance. A higher dimensional balance between an ultra-wide color gamut of 110% for NTSC and high luminance of 400cd/m2 has been achieved by optimizing the back-light system and the color filter based on the high transmissivity of LTPS TFT LCD technology. Also, the module was downsized through integration of peripheral circuitry (LTPS employment, which enables a narrower LCD frame than that of amorphous silicon; integration of semiconductor systems on the glass substrate of the TFT LCD enabling a reduction in the number of instrumentation parts built into the new SOG LCD.)

The new SOG LCD model will be displayed at FPD International 2005 being held in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan, from October 19 - 21.
