I-O DATA unveils HDC-U external storage series
I-O DATA unveiled the new series of external hard-drive-based storage devices HDC-U. The novelties are quieter than the previous series because they don´t have coolers. Besides, they offer hardware and software data security means. The interface is naturally USB2.0.

The new drives are expected to go on sale late in June for ¥41,790 (about $400) for a 400GB model, ¥31,080 (about $300) for a 300GB model, ¥22,050 (about $215) for a 250GB model and ¥16,485 (about $160) for a 160GB model. The novelties are sized 38x197x121mm (like a VHS tape).

Introducing 10GB at 1" or 138 Gbit/inch²
Researchers from Tohoku University achieved the new level of data density in miniature hard drives by developing 1" HDDs of 10GB capacity.

To achieve this density of 138Gbit/inch² they used the perpendicular recording method which popularity grows these days.
Therefore Hitachi, that will most likely commercialize the novelty, will have a chance to outrun Seagate that is currently ahead with its 8GB Microdrive introduced last week along with nine other solutions.
