CeBIT 2005: 8-way Opteron-based server from TYAN
At CeBIT 2005 TYAN Computer showcased an 8-way server named Transport VX50 designed for Opteron 8xx processors.
As you can the see, the system is rather compact. The secret is that it has two motherboard "layers". One is occupied by Thunder K8QW (S4881) motherboard with 4 x Socket 940:
The motherboard bases on NVIDIA nForce Professional chipset with AMD-8131 PCI-X tunnel. Therefore we get 2 x PCI Express x16 (16 lanes + 4 lanes) and 3 x 64-bit PCI-X slots. Other features include 8MB RAGE XL graphics, 2 x Gigabit Ethernet (Broadcom BCM5704), 4 x Serial ATA and SCSI.
The second "layer", M4881, is more interesting. Similar to the first one, it has own power connectors:
This motherboard has 4 x CPU sockets with memory socket sets.
The whole system can use up to 128GB of registered ECC DDR333/400 memory. Sized 406.4x330mm, such a sandwich requires proper cooling, but still it fits into a suitably sized case.
The boards are interconnected by 16-bit 800MHz HyperTransport or rather HTX (HyperTransport Expansion Interface) developed for this purpose (located between CPU sockets).
