ASUS P4GPL-X motherboard: i915PL chipset + Socket 478
Among other products ASUSTeK now offers a motherboard combining older Socket 478 and up-to-date Intel 915P chipset — P4GD1. The release of i915PL / i915GL (lite versions of i915P/i915GV), the deficit and obsolescence of i865x(x) chipsets, and the relatively low price of Intel Socket 478 processors enabled ASUS to unveil such a remake of P4GD1 – the P4GPL-X:
The board has the same PCB layout as the senior product, but its features are more humble: P4GPL-X was stripped off the additional RAID controller, but obtained a more up-to-date 8ch Realtek ALC880 audio codec. It still has the Marvell 88E8053 LAN connected via PCI Express. Note that ASUS also offers LGA 775 boards on i915PL, e.g. P5GPL, which breaks one of the official i915PL limitations, namely the just two memory modules support. Anyway P4GPL-X has only two 184-pin DIMM sockets.
The price of this novelty is still unknown, but it shouldn´t be high considering the price of i915PL. However, it wouldn´t also press the ASRock segment of value motherboards.
