Palm Zire 31 and Zire 72: the first details

As you might know, PalmOne was going to introduce a number of new PDAs and a smartphone today. While there´s no official press release, Zire 31 and Zire 72 specifications are already online.

Let´s start with Zire 31. As expected, the new entry-level model obtained a color STN LCD display, while the resolution remained 160x160. Comparing to the first Zire model, novelty´s processor clock rate grew to 200MHz from 16MHz (approximately doubled comparing to the last year´s Zire 21). Besides, the PDA now works under a newer Palm OS 5.2.8. The device features 3.5mm audio output, speaker, SD/SDIO/MultiMediaCard slot, 16MB memory. Sized 112x74x16mm, it weighs 116g.

Zire 31 is bundled with traditional Calendar, Contacts, Memos, Notes, Tasks, World Clock, Calculator, Expense, Security, Photos as well as powerOne Calculator, Handmark Mobile DB and Handmark Splash Money and RealOne Player for Palm with MP3 support, Palm eBook Reader, Handmark Solitaire.

Higher-end Zire 72 is some larger (116x75x17mm) and heavier (136g), but it features a 1280x960 (1.2-megapixel) digital camera that also supports 320x240 movie recording. The camera has automatic white balance and is imbued with Sepia, Black and White/Blue filters. Zire 72 also has a 65536-color 320x320 TFT LCD, a Bluetooth adapter and bases on a 312MHz Intel ARM processor and Palm OS 5.2.8. A 3.5mm audio output, speaker, SD/SDIO/MultiMediaCard slot, 32MB memory (24MB free) are also in situ.

Plextor announces PX-712SA, a SATA DVD drive

Plextor announced its new internal CD/DVD recorder, PX-712SA, that supports 12x DVD burn speed that theoretically enables to write 4.7GB in 6 minutes. Other speeds are:

  • 12x DVD+R recording
  • 4x DVD+RW recording
  • 8x DVD-R recording
  • 4x DVD-RW recording
  • 48x CD and 24x CD-RW recording
  • 16x DVD reading
  • 48x CD reading

One thing that distinguishes the novelty is Serial ATA (SATA) interface (150MB/s) instead of traditional Parallel ATA (E-IDE). The drive has 8MB buffer and supports Buffer Underrun Proof (CD), Lossless Linking (DVD+R/W) and Zero Link (DVD-R/W) buffer protection. Similar to the previous model, PX-712SA allows burning up to 1GB onto a 99-min blank due to GigaRec support.

The bundle includes Ahead Nero Burning ROM, Ahead InCD, Nero BackItUp, Pinnacle Studio, CyberLink PowerDVD, PlexTools Professional. The drive is to go on sale in June for €200 (no VAT included).

QuickView Expander: Maxtor´s consumer hard drives

Maxtor announced a line of external Maxtor QuickView Expander hard drives with capacities up to 160GB. It´s interesting that Maxtor underlines the consumer position of these novelties and thoroughly differentiates consumer and PC markets.

QuickView Expander series has the following features:

  • 40/80/120/160 GB capacity
  • SATA, USB 2.0 interfaces
  • <12ms average seek
  • 5400rpm rotation speed
  • 2MB buffer

New products are expected in the market closer to Summer 2004, mostly in devices like digital video recorders. Of course, QuickView Expander will go on sale standalone, but no dates have been officially disclosed.
