Renesas to invest over $307 million into Flash memory development Renesas Technology informed about plans to invest $307.6 million into its Trenceti Technologies subsidiary to double the high-density Flash memory production by the Autumn 2004. Consider this on the background of mid-November agreement between Hitachi / Mitsubishi and Powerchip Semiconductor about the release of 1Gbit Assist Gate-AND chips. According to Renesas trying to occupy a share of the Flash market ($2.25 billion; about 40% belongs to Toshiba, while Samsung expects about 66% by 2005)) with its AND Flash. Their 1GBit chips can store over 100 hi-res digital images (chips are naturally intended for digital still cameras and camera-equipped handsets) and provide higher write speed than NAND Flash. After this investment plan is carried out, the monthly performance of Trecenti Technologies is to make 12,000 of 300mm wafers (vs. the current 9,000 wafers, of which 3,000 are AND Flash). Converting to chips Renesas´s new performance is 5 million of 1Gbit AG-AND units monthly in the next fiscal year (vs. the current 1.8 million chips). Given the correct resource management, Renesas might control about 20% of the Flash market by 2005 with its 4Gbit AG-AND chips.
4GB and 2GB Microdrives expected in Japan in January About a year ago we first reported that HGST (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) was going to release 2GB and 4GB Microdrive storage solutions with CF Type II interface. As you know, in November HGST started sampling 4GB drives.
![]() It seems that in January such disks will arrive to the retail in large quantities, but under different trademarks. Today Japanese Melco announced the similar release 4GB RMD-4G ($780) and 2GB RMD-2G ($400) drives to be sold under the Buffalo brand. The new 4GB Microdrive support only FAT32, so they won´t work with older digital cameras and other equipment supporting FAT16 only.

Photo of the day: Sparkle SP8836U-PT on GF FX 5700 Ultra — card in the jar Sparkle continues to package its top graphics cards into original jars. With time cards are getting bigger, so the package grows as well. This particular GeForce FX 5700 Ultra Platinum (SP8836U-PT) graphics card is so big that, according to the Editor of our Video section, Andrew Vorobyev, it can store up to 8 kg (e.g. sugar. :) The card itself resembles the host of other similar cards on GeForce FX 5700 Ultra GPU: 128MB 256-bit DDR II, 475/900MHz, D-Sub, DVI-I, TV-Out, VIVO.
