At the same time SDRAM spot prices will continue to increase. Anyway, European and North American companies will keep the demand high for some time after the Christmas. Taiwanese DRAM makers are expected to continue the turn from the spot market to contract OEM shipments that can affect the spot price growth as well. Though new players will have to face the serious rivals, already working for OEM contracts, like Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology, Infineon Technologies, and Nanya Technology. AU Optronics tests 5G TFT-LCD production lines According to messages from Taiwan, AU Optronics launched the pilot testing of its new 5G TFT LCD fab production lines. AUO representatives conducted a special pre-Christmas press conference to demonstrate the first 17" LCD panels from the first Taiwanese TFT LCD 5G fab.![]() According to AU Optronics, the volume production of LCD panels will be launched in Q2 2003. Mitubishi Electric releases CP3020D sublime printer Mitubishi Electric announced the shipments of the new CP3020D USB color sublime photo printer supporting formats up to A4+.![]() CP3020D utilizes new 314DPI thermal heads, providing 314 dpi resolution. 24Mb printer buffer can store the file to be printed, enabling duplication without PC. The average printing speed is 77s for an À4 sheet. The device supports glossy and matt printing with different exchangeable print tapes. Max. print size is 215.9x355.6 mm (8x12"), 2:3 photo printing is also supported. The device utilizes Y/M/C color tapes along with OP. Printer dimensions are 402x378x231 mm, weight 14 kg. Perception Digital announces FuXion Genie MP3 player Perception Digital announced its miniature FuXion Genie MP3 player with a built-in MP3 encoder and integrated FM tuner.![]() The former enables FuXion Genie (PD-098-01) to record radio broadcasts from tuner (up to 30 presets), built in mic, or external source in the MP3 format by a single click. MP3 formats supported: 48, 96, 128 Kbps / 44.1kHz. The player features 128Mb of built-in memory (256Mb version is expected), supports MP3 and WMA (VBR), requires a single AAA battery for about 15-hour operation. The display provides ID3 Tag information, the integrated equalizer features five presets. Player dimensions are 73x42x16 mm, weight 39 g. VIA: a new action against Intel As it turned out not everyone is in the mood for peace these Christmas days. On December 24 VIA Technologies brought an action to Trade Federation of Taiwan against Intel, accusing it in unfair competition. According to messages from Taiwan, other companies, for example, AMD, can join the action as well.Along with the action, VIA presented documents to illustrate Intel doings in technological licensing as well as monopolistic actions against hardware manufacturers.
