Wistron will release 1.1 million PDAs for Dell

After long negotiations with Taiwanese contract manufacturers, Dell Computer decided to order 1.1 million PDAs from Wistron, contract PC maker, separated from Acer last year. According to contract terms, this quantity of PDAs must be ready by X-mas.

According to various industry sources, new Microsoft Pocket PC PDAs will appear in for sale in November for about $300 retail price.

As you know, Compal Electronics, Mitac Technology and High Tech Computer (HTC) took part in the Dell´s PDA shipment tender. Wistron plans manage in time constraints, as it already has necessary PDA design, developed earlier for the Chinese market and requiring only some minor modifications.

Dataquest: desktop market recession, notebook market growth

Despite uneasy industry times and 1% desktop PC sales volumes recession in the second quarter (comparing to year-ago data), mobile PC sales continue to grow. According to provisional information from Dataquest, notebook sales volumes grew by 6.1% in 2Q 2002.

In the second quarter total sold notebooks made about 6.9 million units, that´s far exceeds the year-ago numbers of 6.5 million units. According to Dataquest, growth of notebook demand was noticed in large regions worldwide, excluding Japan and Latin America Латинской Америки. For example, North American market demand grew by 9.3% in the second quarter comparing to the year-ago values.

Dataquest forecasts that mobile PC market will outperform desk-based computer market in unit growth terms in both 2002 and 2003.

Hon Hai Group: new TFT LCD market player

Another player is to appear in the densely TFT LCD market — Hon Hai Group, now constructing its 5G fab.

Hon Hai Group is known by its various shipments — from barebone systems and modules to sockets — to leading OEM integrators. The production group had been successful lately, so it was decided to invest $700 million to $1 billion into construction of a TFT LCD fab in Hsinchu.

Under conditions when not only foreign brands like Samsung Electronics, LG Philips Display, but also five local Taiwanese industry leaders nurture similar plans for 5G fabs construction, a try to become a leader seems doubtful enough, however Hon Hai Group is optimistic about that. Company leaders believe that despite possible overproduction problems, this sector has bright future, and TFT LCD demand will absorb any production volumes.

From the very beginning Hon Hai Group plans to avoid mistakes of other multiproduction enterprises and announce the establishment of a new company, which name is still undisclosed. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Hon Hai Group leader, will become its largetst stock holder. The fab is to be fully constructed in 2004.

Taiwanese notebook manufacturers provide details about Banias pricing

According to Taiwanese notebook makers, Intel has already gave them provisional pricing for Banias chips, expected in volumes in H1 2003.

Their pricing will depend not only on clock rate, but also on presence/absence of wireless single- (LAN 802.11) and dual-range protocols.

Intel Banias and WLAN package will provisionally cost:

  • 1.3 GHz chip — $200 — $230
  • 1.4 GHz chip — $290 — $315
  • 1.5 GHz chip — $420 — $445
  • 1.6 GHz chip — $630 — $660

In 4Q 2003 Intel plans to announce Banias or rather Dothan already with 1.8 GHz clock rate and 0.09-micron process technology. According to Taiwan sources, Dothan will require less power.
