Conroe First Tests: Flawless Victory

At Intel Developer Forum 2006 the journalists obtained the long-anticipated Conroe processors and tested them in a number of applications and benchmarks 4 months before their official announcement.

In particular, they compared Conroe 2.67 MHz and AMD Athlon FX 60 overclocked to 2.8 GHz (an analog of FX 62). Motherboards were, respectively, a modified Intel D975XBK and DFI RD480. 1GB of DDR2 operated at 4-4-4 and 2-2-2/1T (DDR) respective timings. Also, both systems had "CrossFired" Radeon X1900 XT and Windows XP.

Multimedia encoding:

Windows Media Video 9:

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 1 minute 15 seconds;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 1 minute 6 seconds.

iTunes 6.0.1.3:

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 1 minute 42 seconds;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 1 minute 27 seconds.

DivX 6.1:

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 44 seconds;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 31 seconds.

Games:

Unreal Tournament 2004 Bot Patch (1024*768):

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 159,64fps;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 186,95fps.

Quake 4 - Time Demo (1024*768):

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 226,4fps;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 278,1fps.

Half Life Source (lost_coast) - Time Demo (1024*768):

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 112,67fps;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 140,02fps.

FEAR (CPU - max., graphics - average) - Time Demo (1024*768). Average FPS:

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - 193fps;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - 281fps.

PCMark:

  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - memory 4468;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - memory 5504;
  • AMD Athlon FX60, 2.8 GHz - CPU - 5548;
  • Intel Conroe, 2.67 GHz - CPU - 6755.

Thus, not the most powerful representative of Conroe series successfully won in all tests over the today's fastest desktop CPU from AMD. With time we'll see how this situation changes when AMD moves to Socket AM2 and DDR2 memory. It's also unclear how close to the beginning of Q3 Conroe processors will go on sale. But for now their prospects are rather optimistic.
