Adaptec Unveils New SATA II 4-Port And 8-Port RAID Controllers

Adaptec announced a new family of enterprise RAID controllers for its Serial ATA product line, the Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 2420SA and the Adaptec Serial ATA II 2820SA, which are company's first SATA II RAID on Chip (ROC) solutions. These new SATA II controllers also offer optional software upgrade that includes support for array snapshots to simplify enterprise backup of block data and advanced RAID capabilities such as Dual Drive Failure Protection (RAID 6 on Adaptec 2820SA only) to protect against the simultaneous failure of up to two drives.

Adaptec 2420SA and 2820SA support standard SATA II features including Native Command Queuing (NCQ) to optimize the execution of commands. In addition, there are several optional features which can be easily added at any time by purchasing a license for Adaptec's Advanced Data Protection Suite. Included in the Advanced Data Protection Suite is patent-pending Adaptec RAID 6 technology (Adaptec 2820SA only), as well as support for Hot Space (RAID 5EE) and Striped Mirror (RAID 1E). Snapshot Backup, another feature included with the Advanced Data Protection Suite, provides the ability to create point-in-time copies of data stored on an internal or external array in order to improve enterprise backup operations; while Copyback Hot Spare allows system administrators to designate a drive location as a hot spare. After a drive failure and replacement, the controller will automatically migrate back to the original configuration.

Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 2820SA is an 8-port SATA II RAID controller designed for workstations and servers with a 64-bit 133MHz PCI-X host interface and connects up to eight SATA or SATA II disk drives. The Adaptec Serial ATA II 2420SA includes 4 SATA II ports and is also meant for high-density servers and workstations. In addition to the integrated ROC ASIC, the cards provide 128MB standard or 256MB (optional) of ECC-protected DDR DRAM and an optional battery unit. The data protection is provided by Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) along with Adaptec Storage Manager for single interface management across all Adaptec RAID products.

Adaptec PCI-X to Serial ATA II RAID 2420SA and 2820SA Features:

  • SATA II feature support including Native Command Queuing (NCQ), 3Gb/s per port, SES2 enclosure management;
  • Connects with SATA or SATA II drives;
  • 128MB fixed memory (256MB optional), ECC protected;
  • Adaptec AIC-8210 SATA II ROC;
  • Adaptec Storage Manager management software;
  • Half-length full-height form factor;
  • Standard RAID levels 0, 1, 10, 5, 50 and optional RAID levels 1E, 5EE, 6 and 60 (RAID 6 and 60 on Adaptec 2820SA only);
  • Optional array Snapshot Backup and Copyback Hot Spare;
  • Hot swap, hot spares, Online Capacity Expansion, RAID Level Migration, Optimized Disk Utilization;
  • Optional battery module for cache backup;
  • Supports Windows, Linux, Netware, and FreeBSD operating systems.
  • Adaptec SATA Product Family

The Adaptec 2420SA and 2820SA join a family of Adaptec SATA products which includes a variety of 0, 2, 4, 8, and 16 port models. The Adaptec 2420SA and 2820SA will also be compatible with the family of Adaptec Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) RAID controllers scheduled for release before the end of the year. This means that customers using Adaptec SATA II controllers can upgrade to Adaptec SAS controllers and attach their SATA drives seamlessly, providing a simple upgrade path that customers can leverage at any time they're ready to move to Serial Attached SCSI (SAS).

The Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 2820SA will begin shipping through distribution partners to resellers in November and the Adaptec 2420SA will begin shipping in December. Both products will also be available through the Adaptec online store. Pricing begins at $375.00 MSRP for the 2420SA and $575.00 MSRP for the 2820SA.
