A-Data sampling DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 FB-DIMMs
A-Data Technology, ranked by iSuppli as the number three third-party DRAM-module supplier in the world and number one in Asia, announced that it has started offering DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) and DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) Fully-Buffered DIMMs (FB-DIMMs) for testing and evaluation purposes. The company is aiming to officially launch its FB-DIMM product line early next year.
Available in capacities of 512MB, 1GB and 2GB, the FB-DIMMs from A-Data utilize DRAM from Samsung, Elpida and Hynix, according to the company. A-Data’s suppliers of Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) chips, the key to FB-DIMM technology, are Intel, Integrated Device Technology (IDT) and NEC, the company said. NEC declared the availability of its AMB samples in September 2004 and a similar announcement from IDT followed three months later. Two weeks ago at IDF Fall 2005, IDT stated that interoperability has been achieved between FB-DIMMs that use both IDT’s and Intel’s AMB devices.
A-Data said its FB-DIMMs will initially target server platforms with up to eight DIMM slots. According to Intel, FB-DIMM technology will provide systems with support of up to 192GB of memory through six channels, eight modules per channel and 4GB per module incorporating 1Gbit DRAM devices. Last month, Elpida, Infineon and Micron announced their 4GB FB-DIMMs.
Some DRAM-module houses, such as the US-based Kingston Technology and Taiwan-based Apacer Technology (placed 1st and 5th respectively in the iSuppli’s ranking for 2004), showcased their FB-DIMM samples earlier this year at Computex 2005. Taiwan DRAM vendor Nanya Technology is currently sampling FB-DIMMs with capacities of 512MB, 1GB and 2GB, and the company expects to begin regular production of 512MB and 1GB products in the fourth quarter this year.
