Intel began to ship Itanium 2: HP, ATI and others
To expand our yesterday story about Intel´s recently begun shippings of its new 64-bit Itanium 2 processors.
Hewlett-Packard announced the release of HP-UX 11i Version 1.6, providing feature-rich and well-designed environment for Itanium 2 family. Now it´s offered as a de facto industry standard.
HP-UX 11i Version 1.6 provides data-, source code- and application-compatibility of PA-RISC and Itanium architectures.
With the introduction of HP-UX 11i Version 1.6, HP-UX gains a number of new important features. Capable of supporting up to 64 processors, HP-UX 11i Version 1.6 provides scalability for Itanium-based systems.
HP-UX 11i Version 1.6 features load balancing and other functionality as well as the complete set of built-in data security features, such as unauthorised access detection, catalog authentification and the support of web servers with built-in encryption/decryption libraries like HP Apache and Zeus. Besides, with the release of new software HP-UX System Inventory Manager and HP-UX Kernel Configuration tools, HP-UX 11i Version 1.6 operating system gains additional system management capabilities.
We have some details about new Intel E8870 chipset for Itanium 2 based systems, that is expected later, in fall. It´s designed for building 2-16-processor Itanium 2 systems.

Intel E8870 supports Itanium 2 processors with 400 MHz FSB, up to 128 GB RAM (using 4 GB DIMM units) per each processor unit; it also features PCI/PCI-X support.

ATI has also announced the support of Itanium 2 platform. The company offers its line of FIRE GL GPUs, with full 64-bit environment software support.
In general, many companies supported Itanium 2 yesterday, including Bull, NEC HP, ATI, NVIDIA LSI Logic, Qlogic, etc. It seems that Intel´s second-generation 64-bit processors have entered the market to occupy it for a long, long time.
