Hot September: Gigabyte to purchase Elsa, ASUS to launch ATI-based graphics brand
It seems there will be a lot of interesting events in September. Here are
two news from Taiwan related to ATI.
First, German Elsa, the well-known ATI-based graphics cards supplier, might be purchased by Gigabyte Technology. According to the sources, talks have been underway, and initial agreements have reportedly been set. The acquisition might be finalized late in September.
If completed, the acquisition, will allow Gigabyte to acquire orders for desktop graphics that Elsa is currently placing at First International Computer (FIC). Nowadays both companies (Gigabyte and FIC) are engaged in contract manufacture of Elsa´s desktop graphics on ATI GPUs.
The second news is related to ATI more. Asustek Computer, a key customer for NVIDIA´s graphics chipsets in Asia, expects to launch its own graphics brand on ATI solutions by the end of this quarter. Both sides plan to officially announce the event late in September, denying it till then.
According to ATI, Asustek is making certain volumes of ATI-based graphics cards by request of its OEM customers alongside developing motherboards on ATI 9100IGP chipset. But two partners haven´t yet worked as partners on their own graphics brand. But there´s one thing absolutely unclear: whether Asustek is to continue the graphics partnership with NVIDIA, or not.
