Test results: performance
These are the tools we used:
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein (MultiPlayer) (id Software/Activision) OpenGL, multitexturing, ixbt0703-demo,
test settings all maximal, S3TC OFF, configurations can be dowloaded
here.
- Unreal 2: The Awakening (Infogrames), DirectX 8.1, multitexturing,
auxiliary Bench'emAll! 2.5beta benchmark.
- RightMark 3D (one of the game scenes) DirectX 8.1,
Dot3, cube texturing, shadow buffers, vertex and pixel shaders (1.1, 1.4).
Test settings: pixel shaders 1.1, shadow buffers OFF.
- HALO: Combat Evolved (Microsoft) Direct3D, Vertex/Pixel Shaders 1.1/2.0,
Hardware T&L, maximal quality.
- Half-Life2 (Valve/Sierra) DirectX 9.0, two different demos (ixbt07 and coast), anisotropic filtering enabled.
- Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell v.1.2b (UbiSoft) - Direct3D, Vertex/Pixel Shaders 1.1/2.0, Hardware T&L, maximal quality (Very High); demo 1_1_2_Tbilisi, AA not working.
- Call of Duty (MultiPlayer) (Infinity Ward/Activision) OpenGL, multitexturing, ixbt0104demo, test settings all maximal, S3TC ON
- Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness v.49 (Core Design/Eldos Software) - DirectX 9.0, Paris5_4 demo, test settings are here.
- Fac Cry v.1.1 (Crytek/UbiSoft), DirectX 9.0, multitexturing,
demo01 (startup with the -DEVMODE option), test settings all Very High.
- Serious Sam: The Second Encounter v.1.05 (Croteam/GodGames)
OpenGL, ixbt0703-demo, S3TC OFF.
- Unreal Tournament 2003 v.2225 (Digital Extreme/Epic Games) Direct3D, Vertex Shaders,
Hardware T&L, Dot3, cube texturing, quality by default.
- Code Creatures Benchmark Pro (CodeCult) game test that demonstrates the board working in DirectX 8.1, Shaders, HW T&L.
- Painkiller v.1.15 (People Can Fly/Dreamcatcher) DirectX 9.0, multitexturing, test settings all maximal,
built-in benchmark.
Those willing to receive the demo benchmarks we use, please contact me by e-mail.
Considering how powerful today's accelerators are, I decided to rid this review of some modes with either AA or AF, leaving only clear modes and the ones with AA+AF.
Please note the colour of the diagram lines. Rose-to-violet tones are used when "senior" models are compared (RADEON X800XT and GeForce 6800 Ultra), while
green ones are for medium ones (RADEON 9800 XT, GeForce FX 5950 Ultra, and GeForce 6800).
The situation with GeForce 6800 Ultra is clear: it is only rivalled by RADEON X800 XT, and GeForce 6800 with its nominal price of USD 299 (320-400 for the end of June) has yet no ATI rival from the X800 series. But because 9800 XT and 5950 Ultra are being sold at over USD 400 now, it is very interesting to compare the new card with these two ones. Perhaps it will show that the above-mentioned RADEON 9800 XT and especially FX 5950 Ultra should be either removed from the counters or sell at 30-50 percent cheaper.
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
There's no point in taking the results mode by mode as the picture is clear as it is:
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 Ultra vs. ATI RADEON X800 XT: a victory
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. ATI RADEON 9800 XT: s victory
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra: a victory.
Performance gain is substantial.
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
The lightest mode (no AA or anisotropy): 6800 wins.
The heaviest mode (AA and anisotropy): the same thing.
Total:
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 Ultra vs. ATI RADEON X800 XT: success
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. ATI RADEON 9800 XT: a solid victory
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra: the same
Code Creatures
The lightest mode (no AA or anisotropy): a splendid result!
The heaviest mode (AA and anisotropy): 6800 Ultra have lost.
Total:
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 Ultra vs. ATI RADEON X800 XT: loss if heavy modes are to be considered
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. ATI RADEON 9800 XT: vice versa, a clear victory
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra: the same
Unreal Tournament 2003
The lightest mode (no AA or anisotropy): Ultra have lost, 6800 have won.
The heaviest mode (AA and anisotropy): 6800 Ultra have lost, 6800 is equal to its rivals.
Total:
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 Ultra vs. ATI RADEON X800 XT: a loss
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. ATI RADEON 9800 XT: a parity
- Leadtek GeForce 6800 vs. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra: a parity
