Monthly drivers report and popular 3D
accelerators comparison

Monthy 3Digest is the project of iXBT.com and Digit-Life.com dedicated to informing you about the performance of a large number of graphics cards under Windows XP in the past month.

This issue is dedicated to drivers released from the 15th of November to the 15th of December 2006. Traditionally our 3Digest informs you about the best price/performance ratios available in the market. Another very important part of any issue is cards' 3D graphics quality shown on the example of a wide selection of games.

It's our 79th issue of 3Digest.

December 2006

Added benchmarks of GeForce 7950 6800 GT 256MB, 7600 GS overclocked, RADEON X1950 XT 512MB.

We've considerably updated our benchmarks with modern games.

Brief summary of the year 2006.

The year started rather optimistically from the angle of the permanent "titan's clash": RADEON X1900 series followed by GeForce 7900 series. Then NVIDIA attacked and introduced dual-GPU 7950GX2. The clash ended with the release of RADEON X1950 XTX, ATI's merger with AMD (which, together with somewhat incorrect policies resulted in the loss of the market share by ATI). Year finals were made by the release of NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series, the first DX10 accelerator, though it was impossible to normally benchmark it's native API (no drivers, no applications). Therefore NVIDIA acted more lively in 2006, released more products, while its rival was mostly renaming its cards to boost sales. The year 2007 promises us another clash of industry titans, so let's wait for the release of AMD/ATI's R600.

PLEASE NOTE! This issue contains only PCI-E cards benchmarks! The final AGP benchmarks were made in March 2006 (see this page)!

3. December 2006 news and current matters

Added a number of new graphics cards (marked "NEW").

We've changed benchmarks and added a number of games using HDR. We've also replaced the 2048x1536 results with 2560x1600 ones. The following games were removed from our list: HL2, Doom III, Call of Duty 2, Chronics Of Riddick.

  • 3.1. The following drivers were released from November 15, 2006 to December 15, 2006:

  • 3.2. In this issue of 3Digest we used 96.97 drivers for NVIDIA benchmark summaries (97.xx drivers for 8800 series featured memory clock rate setting bug, so we didn't use them), and 6.12 drivers for ATI benchmark summaries.

4. Summary diagrams of graphics cards performance with the latest drivers for December 2006

All willing to see the complete results in Excel 2003 format can download this RAR 3.0 or this ZIP archive.

5. 3D accelerator ratings calculations for the end of the month

Calculations were based on gaming benchmark results as well as the results from 3DMark06 new tests (ATI CATALYST 6.12, NVIDIA ForceWare 96.97).

All willing to conduct their own rating calculations with own values are invited to download this Excel XP table in RAR 3.0 or ZIP format.

The method of rating calculation is described here.

Calculations were conducted considering the following assumptions:

  1. Percentage of performance and quality demand ratio:
    • performance priority - 60%
    • quality priority - 40%

  2. Only the HIGHEST resolution available in games was used to calculate prospect ratings.
  3. The usability rating indicates performance and features of a card (numerator) related to its price (denominator).

According to your wishes, we separated ratings into two groups: the first gathers all benchmarks, and the second contains only the gaming tests without m3DMark05/06. Disbelieving the synthetic tests, many think the second group is of higher importance.
