3Digest, June 2006

Monthly drivers report and popular 3D
accelerators comparison

Monthy 3Digest is the project of iXBT.com and Digit-Life.com dedicated to informing you about the performance of a large number of graphics cards under Windows XP in the past month.

This issue is dedicated to drivers released from the 15th of May 2006 to the 15th of June 2006. Traditionally our 3Digest informs you about the best price/performance ratios available in the market. Another very important part of any issue is cards' 3D graphics quality shown on the example of a wide selection of games.

It's our 73th issue of 3Digest.

June 2006

All right! 3Digest is 6 years old! This time we won't celebrate another anniversary. Thanks God, we've passed the 5-year BORDER=1 and that's it. Next time we'll draw a global bottom line, when the digest is 10 years old.

Besides, the passed year brought about only a few changes. Just the AGP testbed became a matter of the past. But if you want, here's the last-year article about 3Digest's startup.

As of June, the key event was volume release of GeForce 7950 GX2 based on dual G71 cores.

PLEASE NOTE! This issue contains only PCI-E cards benchmarks! The last AGP test results are dated March 2006 and provided here.

1. Testbed configuration

  • System on Athlon 64 (939Socket)
    • AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU (L2=1024K);
    • ASUS A8N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard on NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16; for testing ATI CrossFire we used ASUS A8R32-MVP motherboard on ATI RADEON Xpress 3200 CrossFire.

3. June 2006 news and events

Added a number of new graphics cards (marked "NEW").

  • 3.1. The following drivers were released from May 15, 2006 to June 15, 2006:

    • NVIDIA ForceWare for all NVIDIA-based cards:

      • Windows XP: 91.31 WHQL release - was released late, so didn't take part in our tests (just with GeForce 7950 GX2).

    • ATI Catalyst for all ATI-based cards:

      • Windows XP: CATALYST 6.6 - was released very late, so it also didn't take part in our tests.

  • 3.2. This month we used 91.28 (91.31 for 7950) drivers for NVIDIA cards summaries, 6.5 drivers for ATI cards summaries.

4. Summary diagrams of graphics cards performance with the latest drivers for June 2006
