SMART Modular Technologies Releases World's Fastest Multi-Level Cell and Highest-Capacity SAS SSD

SMART Modular Technologies today announced the Optimus solid-state drive (SSD) for enterprise storage applications. Featuring a native Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 6Gb/s interface and up to 1.6TB usable capacity, Optimus is claimed to be the industry's highest capacity and fastest SAS multi-level cell (MLC) SSD.

Available in 200GB, 400GB, 800GB, and 1.6TB usable capacities, the new 2.5" SAS SSD features read/write speeds of 100K/50K random IOPS and 500/500 MB/s sustained transfer rates. It also includes support for wide-port SAS capability, providing up to 1GB/s sustained read performance in applications equipped to support this advanced feature.

The new Optimus SSD incorporates Guardian technology, a suite of innovative proprietary features comprised of FlashGuard, DataGuard, and EverGuard technologies. The FlashGuard technology delivers advanced flash management capabilities, ensuring that the Optimus SSD can be used in mainstream, enterprise storage workloads throughout its warranted 5-year period. Incorporating Aggregated Flash Management and Advanced Signal Processing technologies, FlashGuard extracts higher endurance characteristics out of MLC flash, allowing SMART to offer Optimus SSDs with a comprehensive 5-year warranty at usage rates up to 10 full device-writes per day. The DataGuard and EverGuard technologies ensure that data integrity and drive reliability are never compromised, satisfying the demanding requirements of Tier-1 enterprise storage applications. Additionally, Optimus features full T10 DIF support and TCG enterprise encryption.

The SMART Optimus SSD will begin sampling in September 2011.

Iomega Introduces New Mac Companion Hard Drive With Charging Port For Apple Devices

Iomega announced the new Iomega Mac Companion Hard Drive styled to match the latest Mac computers with a convenient 2.1A port to charge your iPad, iPhone and iPod, as well as selection of computer interfaces for connecting peripherals like a printer or other external storage devices.

Available in 2TB and 3TB capacities, the new Iomega Mac Companion Hard Drive utilizes a fast 7200 RPM 3.5-inch hard drive formatted HFS+ for compatibility with Mac computers right out of the box. Also, the design of the Mac Companion Hard Drive allows it to fit on the base of your Apple iMac or your Apple monitor.

The drive includes two FireWire 800 ports, one USB 2.0 port and a 2-port integrated USB 2.0 hub that lets you connect multiple devices such as printers or other external storage devices. As for cables, the Mac Companion Hard Drive comes with one FireWire 800, one conversion FireWire 400-800, and one USB 2.0 cable.

The novelty also features a capacity indicator gauge that lets you know approximately how much space is available to store data. Four LEDs on the front of the Mac Companion Hard Drive tell you the total capacity of the data volume that is being used to store files:

  • 4 LEDs lit white: less than 20% capacity in use
  • 3 LEDs white: 20-40% capacity in use
  • 2 LEDs white: 40-60% capacity in use
  • 1 LED white: 60-80% capacity in use
  • 1 LED red: more than 80% capacity in use

The new drive is available worldwide in two capacities: the 2TB model is $239.99, and the 3TB model is $369.99. It will initially be available exclusively at Apple retail stores and the Apple online store. Later this month, the product will be available from additional stores. Both models of the Iomega Mac Companion Hard Drive include a three-year warranty with registration.
