AMD Introduces 4 New Phenom X4 Processors, 2 New Triple-Core CPUs, 1 New 65W Quad-Core CPU

AMD today announced immediate availability of four new AMD Phenom X4 processors. Led by the AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition processor, each CPU features quad-core design, and when matched to AMD 790 series chipsets supports up to four ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics cards.

AMD Phenom X4 processors 9550 (2.2GHz), 9650 (2.3GHz), 9750 (2.4GHz) and 9850 (2.5GHz) are now available. More details are available at the comparison page.

Pricing:

  • Phenom 9850 'Black Edition' (2.5GHz, 125W, 2MB total dedicated L2 cache, 2MB L3 cache, 4000MHz HyperTransport bus, socket AM2+) -- $235, effective 4/7;
  • Phenom 9750 (2.4GHz, 95W, 2MB total dedicated L2 cache, 2MB L3 cache, 3600MHz HyperTransport bus, socket AM2+) -- $215, effective 4/7;
  • Phenom 9750 (2.4GHz, 125W, 2MB total dedicated L2 cache, 2MB L3 cache, 3600MHz HyperTransport bus, socket AM2+) -- $215, effective 4/7;
  • Phenom 9650 (2.3GHz, 95W, 2MB total dedicated L2 cache, 2MB L3 cache, 3600MHz HyperTransport bus, socket AM2+) -- $215, effective 4/7.

The next three novelties are the AMD Phenom X3 8000 series triple-core processors that are intended to be paired with the AMD 780 series chipset. This AMD desktop solution can provide a full HD experience with support for the latest and most demanding formats, including VC-1, MPEG-2 and H.264 on a mainstream PC. With the AMD Unified Video Decoder (UVD), the solution can process HD playback on the better-suited GPU rather than the CPU so consumers may enjoy a smooth HD viewing experience—less lag, stalling and dropped scenes—in the latest Blu-ray titles.

AMD Phenom X3 processor and AMD 780G chipset based desktop PCs offer DirectX 10 game compatibility. Gamers looking to scale their performance with the addition of a discrete graphics card can accelerate their performance with ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology. This technology can harness the graphics power of both an ATI discrete graphics card and the motherboard GPU in tandem, delivering in some applications up to 70 percent improvements in 3D performance as the press release claims. In addition, the AMD 780G chipset is the second generation AMD chipset to feature AMD OverDrive, a simple user interface that brings performance tuning to the masses.

AMD will be collaborating with ZT Systems to premiere the first system featuring the new AMD Phenom X3 triple-core processor on QVC during the Computer Shop broadcast, which is scheduled to air March 31 at 10 p.m. EDT.

Systems powered by AMD Phenom X3 processors 8400 (2.1GHz) and 8600 (2.3GHz) are expected to be initially available from OEMs and system builders.

Finally, today AMD announced its first 65W quad-core desktop processor, the AMD Phenom X4 9100e. By coupling an AMD Phenom X4 9100e with an AMD 780 series chipset, AMD offers an efficient PC platform that plays Blu-ray movies and delivers a rich computing experience for casual gamers and multimedia enthusiasts.

The AMD Phenom X4 9100e processor embodies a series of AMD energy-efficient innovations, including:

  • Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology, the next generation of AMD's power saving technology;
  • AMD CoolCore technology that dynamically activates or turns off parts of the processor as needed;
  • Independent Dynamic Core Technology, which allows a fully independent frequency control per processor core that can reduce processor energy consumption by adjusting power usage according to core utilization;
  • Dual Dynamic Power Management, which enables a split power plane design, allowing independent voltage planes for processor and memory controller for greater control over performance based on system demands;
  • AMD Wideband Frequency Control, for simplified performance state transitions to help reduce power consumption, latency and software overhead of performance states changes; and
  • Multi-Point Thermal Control, multiple sensors across processor silicon designed to reduce speed and heat when temperature exceeds pre-defined limits.

The AMD Phenom X4 9100e processor is also expected to be available from OEMs and system builders.
