Samsung Launches New Mobile WiMAX Devices in Korea

Samsung Electronics today released three new Mobile WiMAX devices (WiBro in Korea) - a WiBro smart phone (SPH-M8100), a top of the range multimedia convergence device (SPH-P9000), a USB Dongle (SPH-H1200), and a PCMCIA card.

Samsung's SPH-M8100 is a PDA WiBro smart phone which offers wireless Internet, voice telephony and video telephony services through WiBro and CDMA 1x EV-DO. The slider phone boasts a 2.8" color touch screen display, a TV-out, an MMC card slot, and 2 cameras; a 2 megapixel camera and a VGA camera for video calls. Samsung's M8100 also features T-DMB, Bluetooth with A2DP functionality, 128ROM/64MB RAM memory and Microsoft's latest view and edit function.

Samsung's P9000 is a convergence device, capable of providing voice and multimedia data communications via WiBro. The P9000 comes with a full QWERTY keyboard for quick typing and surfing, while the MP3 player, VOD, and camera functions provide easy access to a myriad of multimedia entertainment. In addition, the Samsung P9000 acts as a multi-functional terminal that can be used as a general PC, thanks to its Windows XP-based operating system.

Samsung's WiBro USB Dongle allows users to access both WiBro and HSDPA services via an external peripheral device that connects to a USB port. For security purposes it ensures the use of a specific program can be accessed by authorised users only. Consumers in metropolitan areas can enjoy 13Mbps high-speed wireless Internet services at a more affordable price via WiBro. Users in less connected areas across the country can enjoy Wireless Internet services via HSDPA.

WiBro services offer users web searching, e-mail, multimedia features, video conference, and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) at an affordable price. Purchase reservations can be made for the M8100 and P9000 on the KT WiBro website. WiBro is expected to gain momentum in Korea with this service expansion.

Micron Introduces First Anti-Shake 3-Megapixel Camera SoC For Mobile Phones

Micron Technology unveiled a 1/4-inch, 3-megapixel complete camera system-on-chip sensor for mobile handsets. Unique to the market, Micron has designed an anti-shake feature into the sensor, which reduces image blurring often found in camera phone pictures due to camera shake.

Blurry images are especially common in low-light situations where the shutter is open for longer periods of time to collect enough light to take the picture. A camera phone designed with Micron’s new sensor (product number MT9T111) can reduce image blur by automatically activating the anti-shake feature when sensing camera shake.

Micron offers several 3-megapixel image sensors in differing optical formats, but this new sensor is the first in its class with the anti-shake feature. The new 3-megapixel sensor was developed on Micron’s 1.75-micron pixel and integrates additional camera capabilities on chip including JPEG compression and image processing that would typically require additional chips. For basic operation, the sensor only requires a power supply, lens and clock source.

General customer sampling is planned for August 2007 with mass production expected in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Samsung Develops SpinPoint M5, MP1 Hard Disk Drives

Samsung Electronics announced its new 160GB hard drive using 2.5" disks. Capacity of the single-disk platform ranges between 60 and 160GB, while a dual-disk model is under development that will provide up to 250GB of storage space. Samsung has already shipped test samples of the SpinPoint M5 Series to OEM vendors and plans to begin mass production in mid-April.

The SpinPoint M5 series utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, and the disk drive design has been optimized to allow improved-precision adjustment of the head parking ramp position for high-density recording.

The M5 Series has been developed specifically for portable consumer electronics, where the key to success lies in controlling noise, vibration and power consumption. Samsung's SpinPoint M5 hard drives are 15% quieter and use 5% less energy than other models with the same storage capacity.

The new SpinPoint M5 hard drives feature a 5,400rpm spin rate, 1.5Gbps SATA interface and 8MB cache memory. PATA models will be added to the lineup in May.

The second novelty is the 7200rpm premium 2.5" hard drive, SpinPoint MP1. It provides company's highest storage density of 200GB at 7200rpm on a 2.5inch disk base with SATA interface. The MP1 series is designed for enterprise applications such as workstations, RAID servers, and blade servers.

The SpinPoint MP1 Series utilize perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), a serial ATA 3.0 Gbps interface, and feature native command queuing (NCQ) for high performance. To protect the disk drive from vibration and shock, a rotary vibration controller (RVC) and an optional digital free-fall sensor (FFS) have been implemented.

The RVC technology, first applied to the SpinPoint MP1 series, prevents the head from leaving the track under severe vibration conditions, thereby reinforcing data reliability.

The SpinPoint MP1 series comes in 80/ 120/ 160/ 200GB capacities with a supporting 8/16MB cache memory. Mass production is scheduled for May, directly following sample availability in early May.
