NEC Develops Four New System-on-Glass LCD Modules

NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. today announced the successful development of four new system-on-glass (SOG) liquid crystal display modules, suitable for personal digital assistants and portable GPS terminals. Successful mass production trials for low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin-film-transistor color liquid crystal display modules began at NEC Akita, Ltd. on October 1.

The new modules consist of a 3.5-inch (8.9-centimeters-diagonal) transmissive type LCD, a 3.5-inch transflective type LCD, a 2.7-inch (6.8-centimeters-diagonal) transmissive type LCD and a 2.7-inch transflective type LCD. All of the new products possess the same resolution as VGA TFT LCD modules. Mass production for the 3.5-inch transflective LCDs and the 2.7-inch transmissive LCDs are aimed at February, 2007.

The main characteristics of the new models are as follows:

  • 3.5-Inch (8.9cm Diagonal) Transmissive SOG LCD Module
Optimization resulting from high transmissivity of LTPS TFT LCD technology achieves luminance of 250cd/m2, contrast ratio of 400:1 and color gamut of 70% at the density of 229 ppi.
  • 3.5-Inch (8.9cm Diagonal) Transflective SOG LCD Module
A combination of high transmissivity of LTPS TFT LCD technology and NEC's proprietary super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology achieves luminance of 200cd/m2 and reflective ratio of 15% at the density of 229 ppi.
  • 2.7-Inch (6.8cm Diagonal) Transmissive SOG LCD Module
Optimization based on high transmissivity of LTPS TFT LCD technology achieves luminance of 200cd/m2, contrast ratio of 400:1 and color gamut of 70% at the density of 302ppi.
  • 2.7-Inch (6.8cm Diagonal) Transflective SOG LCD Module
A combination of high transmissivity of LTPS TFT LCD technology and NEC's proprietary super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology achieves luminance of 180cd/m2 and reflective ratio of 15% at the density of 302ppi.

These four new models will be displayed at FPD International 2006, which is being held at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan, from October 18 - 20.

Samsung Releases 8mm Mouse

At KES 2006 in Korea Samsung introduced a very original mouse just 8mm thin.

Other two dimensions are also small: 40x95 mm. Obviously it's meant to be used with UMPCs and notebooks. The wheel is also rather original, it rotates from right to left and features a LED light.

The mouse features 5 buttons, USB interface and a "semi-automatic" retractable USB cable.
